In a world where graphics cards are at insanely inflated prices, many are calling for a more budget-friendly GPU to be released that won’t get too caught up in the scalping and mining sectors. It seems like that time is now coming, as Nvidia has confirmed that a 12GB variant of the RTX 2060 is launching soon.
According to the official specs, the RTX 2060 12GB version will essentially be the same as the RTX 2060 Super, but with higher memory. Rumors point towards a December 7th release date, although not officially confirmed by Nvidia yet. However, it is a good time to release just before the 2021 holidays.
Featuring the same amount of CUDA Cores (2176) as the Super variant, as well as the same clock speeds (1470 MHz Base Clock, 1650 MHz Boost Clock), the only difference between the two cards is that the 12GB version will have a slightly smaller 192-bit memory bus compared to the 256-bit bus width of the Super version. This results in a memory bandwidth of 336 GB/s compared to 448 GB/s for the Super.
|GPU||RTX 2060||RTX 2060 Super||RTX 2060 12GB|
|Base Clock||1365 MHz||1470 MHz||1470 MHz|
|Boost Clock||1680 MHz||1650 MHz||1650 MHz|
|Memory||6GB GDDR6||8GB GDDR6||12GB GDDR6|
|Memory Bandwidth||336 GB/s||448 GB/s||336 GB/s|
|Launch date||January 2019||July 2019||December 2021|
It seems that the main reason for this launch is to provide a sort of intermediate solution for PC gamers, as prices for RTX 30 series cards are extremely high at the moment, but still offers a pretty decent jump in performance over the previous generation. Though it does not come with nearly as many features of the RTX 30 series like higher RT and Tensor cores, PCIe Gen 4.0 and Resizable Bar support.
It is also said to be a bit cheaper to manufacture this time round, which should hopefully be reflected in its price. Rumors are saying it will be sold for around $299, and considering it will (hopefully) have less attention from scalpers and miners, is likely to not go much higher than that. But we’ll just have to wait and see.
What do you think? Is the RTX 2060 12GB variant a good idea? Do you think it will have less attention from scalpers and miners? What price do you think would be fair? Let us know your thoughts!
