Up For Debate - What game did you play the most in 2021?

As we come to the end of January, it’s our last chance to take a look back at the year 2021 in gaming. It was a pretty slow year for game releases, but there were a couple standout titles that could easily be played for hours on end. Although 2022 is looking to be a big year for games, we want to know what game did you play the most in 2021?

In recent years we have seen a massive rise in post-launch content for games, as developers and publishers are realizing the potential of the live service model. From free DLC, to more maps, modes, and ways to play, as well as seasonal events, there are more reasons than ever to go back and play your favorite titles.

Whether you played a game for 20 hours or 200 hours, we want to know which ones hooked you the most in 2021, as many of us got more time to play at home. It doesn’t even have to be a game released in 2021 either! So whether it was Forza Horizon 5 or Halo Infinite, or if you still managed to put 100s of hours into Destiny 2, World of Warcraft, or something else, do let us know!

Also let us know what genre your most played game was, whether that be RPG, Shooter, MMO, Strategy etc. It’s likely we’ll see a few multiplayer titles in there, but you never know as the Single Player industry keeps growing! There’s a huge variety to choose from, with many always begging “just a few more minutes!”

So what do you think? What game did you play the most in 2021? What kind of genre was it? How long did you play it for? And what was the reason you played it for so long? Was it pure enjoyment, post-launch content, modding, or something else? Let’s debate!

What genre was your most played game of 2021?

Was your most played game of 2021 released in 2021?

How long did you play your most played game of 2021?

I think my most played game was still Apex Legends. That's my multiplayer go-to. However, there was more variety in 2021. Lately, I've been sinking a lot of hours into Halo Infinite's campaign, which I'm really enjoying. Thank you 343 for reviving the single player 1st person shooter for me.

I played a bit of Forza Horizon 5 early on, but it dropped off quickly. I do still plan to get back on it at some point, though. Hopped back into Redout in anticipation of its sequel coming this year. Gotta complete it. Also, I've been having a good time modding Cyberpunk and enjoying the game a lot more.

Bro I have 160 hours in AC Valhalla and I can confidently say it is the worst AC game ever made till date not only from a lore perspective but even from a gameplay perspective. It is worse than AC Odyssey anmd that is a really really low bar. AC Valhalla is so bad it makes AC Syndicate look like a masterpiece. I spent 160 hopurs just to see all the story content for which I paid when I bought the Ultimate Edition at a discount.

The reason the recent AC games don't feel as good is because in previous AC Games the game world was designed to facilitate the gameplay and gameplay is king but in recent titles the gameplay os designed to fit the game world and hence is limited by the game world design itself. This is why you have no innovative game mechanics and no tools which facilitate gameplay as seen in The Witcher 3 and the recent God of War or in Arkham Asylum in years past.

The game world is a vast expanse of nothingness which sucks your time and gives a faux feeling of spending a lot of time in the designed world to edge you towards microtransactions because you might as well look good running from point A to point B which takes more time than the actuial story missions themselves.

I played a crazy amount of games in 2021, but I think the most played was Spelunky 2. Bannerlord and Age of Empires II Definitive really close, though.

Easily Forza Horizon 5, i have not had such a good time on a racing game since midnight club 3 dub edition remix, i poured over 120 hours into FH5 as for midnight club i once played over 22 hours in a day only stopping for eating and going to the bathroom, i was a kid on a PS2 back then without any worries

Europa Universalis 4, God of War series, Dark Souls Remastered, World of Warcraft, in that order. I played other games as well, but not nearly as much as those.

The most? hmm hard to say, i've been playing almost exclusively story based singleplayer games so its kinda hard to judge which one i played the most. But probably it's euro truck simulator 2. playing it on triple screen with steering wheel and shifter is sooo relaxing and immersive, just tune in your favorite music or podcast and just start trucking :)

I always use the real world radio station when i play the truck simulator games.

My niece and nephew are real life truck drivers, and they took me once with me, and then with a few texture mods, its almost the real deal when having like you said, multiple monitor setup and a steering wheel.

My steering wheel broke though, and have gone back from dual monitor to single monitor, cause i didnt liked i had to alt tab or when my mouse was too far left of the screen, it snapped to the other screen, so i bought a bigger screen to at least have a bit of immersion left when needed.

The truck simulator games though... Sometimes i still play em, but just like you, mostly i play single player story based games, and (for me) either fifa or lotro :)

im personally not a fan of listening to radio stations in general so i usually stay away from it in ets2 too and stick with spotify. Though that radio station mod based on real world locations in ets2 is really cool. Btw i highly recommend turning off trailer and truck stability in gameplay options so its significantly more sensitive when turning, stock setting is extremely unrealistic and overly stiff :)

Mostly played Battlefield V, many complain but I never had technical issues and loved it mostly, guess it was around 400-500h, and another 400-500h in Division 2 grinding all kinds of gear sets. Also had a blast in Valheim with a friend and sunk around 300h into this. Overall it was a very good, but not spectacular year in gaming for me.

interesting with your choice on bfV, i personally havent played it yet tho i have it in my steam. However from what i heard bf1 is much better or something like bf4, why bfV over those?

I like the setting (especially the pacific maps), the weapon mechanics are the best so far in any BF (in my opinion) because they got rid of the super stupid suppression stuff and the movement feels really snappy and smooth (sprint, crouch sprint, being able to climb obstacles at around head height), maybe I have better memories with this game since I've never had any of the issues other players experienced like stuttering or similar.

BF1 is worse than either BF4 or 5. Mostly due to the historical era limiting stuff overall. Not to mention the weapons... Thinking all the way back to BF3 in comparison, I'd say the only thing BF1 did good was planes, they felt as simple/easy to learn and effective as they were in BF3.

Well even as a hardcore BF player, I don't necessarily agree with the other regulars, but it's fine. BF1 wasn't bad, obviously, I've sank enough hours on two platforms into it.

For daily matches its fifa for me. And I play this since 2014, but for 2021 it was fifa 20, which i played for over 200 hours.

But thats just to pass some hours on the day.

If there is another game that soaks my attention, then i skip fifa for then, and play that other game.

Besides fifa, i play the lord of the rings online in some months very much too, most of the time when a festival is live, or a new expansion is out.

But for the rest, i mostly play and complete games once, and only some examples i play more then once.

So all in all, when a new game that have my interest is out, then i play that untill i either complete it, or have enough of it, and this means, that with a few exceptions the standard time thats given for a game to beat, is my playtime for said game, and therefor, i dont have such high numbers as in lotro or fifa.

Lotro however, is my most played game of all time, with as we stands now, when i type /played, it says 4 months, 3 weeks, 5 days, 14 hours and 23 seconds. And that is total play time over 3000 hours.

Though i think with all fifa's i played combined, its nearing that mark too.

Must have been Forza horizon 5, even if it only came out in november. 😁

Lots of technical problems, but just the amount of cars available make for hundreds of hours of fun.
