Up For Debate - What do you think of Elden Ring so far?

It’s been a week now since From Software’s extremely anticipated Action RPG has launched to the masses after years of excruciating waiting. Now that the game is finally in our hands and after much hype (and a few bug fixes), we wanted to know what do you think of Elden Ring so far?

After playing Elden Ring for the last week myself, the game feels overwhelmingly massive. I’ve put dozens of hours into it already and still nowhere near the end. Maybe that’s a good thing or a bad thing, but it’s clear that Elden Ring is big… like, really BIG. So chances are you haven’t finished it either, but a week since launch seems like as good a time as any to talk about our thoughts so far.

Obviously, opinions on ER will draw comparisons from other From Software titles. Despite Sekiro deviating from a lot of the traditional mechanics from the Dark Souls series we’ve come to know and love, it was still a soulslike at heart. Elden Ring is similar (in that it tries new things) with a lot of its mechanics, but feels closer to Dark Souls than Sekiro did, almost even like a spiritual Dark Souls 4.

Does that mean Elden Ring is the future of the Dark Souls franchise? Maybe, maybe not. It’s clear From Software wants to try new things before returning to the world of Dark Souls, and Elden Ring could provide that freshness they so clearly desire. But is that a good thing? And could you see Elden Ring becoming a new franchise? Or just another spinoff from Dark Souls?

So what do you think of Elden Ring so far? Are you enjoying it? Are you new to the soulslike genre or a hardcore veteran? Where does it rank in your favorite soulslike games by From Software? And would you like to see more Elden Ring games in the future? Or a return to the classic Dark Souls formula? Let’s debate!

What do you think of Elden Ring so far?

What is your favorite soulslike game by From Software now?

Would you like to see more Elden Ring? Or a return to Dark Souls?

Is Elden Ring more approachable for new players than Dark Souls?

dude what have you been doing for 140 hours? I've played 12 hours and I'm doing as much as possible in each area and I have completed the Limgrave, the Weeping Peninsula and Liurnia Lakes zones as close to 100% as I can(I haven't found anything that I have missed, but proably I've missed a couple of things in each zone) and I'm 1/3rd way through clearing the Red Zone(Claeid I think).

What am I missing? Or is there more than the map shows? Or how long are the later game zones? They seem smaller than Limgrave, Liurnia and Claeid.

12 hours seems low to complete all them areas 100% (or maybe I'm just bad😅). It's taken me roughly 40 hours to do all them(including 2 great runes plus the ancient rune and all goal's catacombs etc.)

No just the first two areas, along with the weeping peninsula, which is very small in comparison, and 1/3rd of the red one, but also I think it's 100%, most likely I've missed a few things here and there.

But that's my second character i made, on my first I cleaned up around half of the first area and decided I'm going to make a new one as I wasn't happy with that one. So on my second character I knew the area better.

I did all the tunnels, caves, catacombs I could find as well, and the ruins too, along with the keeps/castles and I searched as much as possible in each area.

The red area's caves are giving me problmes due to the scarlet rot, that thing sucks, I have no more anti-dotes and IDK how to craft or buy more.

Ah I can't remember where I found it but there is an incantation that removes scarlet rot, very handy! I think it's call 'flame, cleanse me!' or something similar.

For starters, you are missing 70% of the map. You have no idea how big the game actually is then. When you get to Malenia you'll be roughly lvl 130-140 maybe even 150. You can skip her since she's optional legendary boss. If you manage to beat Radahn at lvl 70 i'll be impressed.

I'm collecting, exploring, doing quest lines of all NPCs, doing legacy dungeons, doing ordinary dungeons, secret areas are huge. There are just 90 ashes of war and same number of talismans i think. I managed to collect 60-ish ashes only. Check Elden Ring wiki to see how the map looks. They haven't even mapped everything since i alone managed to stumble on some dungeons that aren't on their map. I believe you'll be satisfied with this answer. Also there is a lot of backtracking so yeah, you ain't done. And 1st is just above ground. Click on the map on the More info tab to see underground.

Oh holy crap, there is an underground map :O

Also sure, let's say I'm 1/3rd of the way through the game, but I still don't see 140 hours of content even if you are doing everything, but then again I might be wrong.

I checked and I have missed 7 things in total in Limgrave, the Weeping Peninsula and Liurnia Lakes.

Yeah, 1 dungeon can take half an hour if you don't get lost.

You may think you are on 1/3 of the game. Game is just trolling you. Miyazaki has done excellent job in doing so.

The Eldensoulsborneekiro series is fine and all, but my favorite FromSoft game by far is The Adventures of Cookie and Cream.

Elden Ring is pretty much open world souls with refined mechanics. If you’re like me, and love that style of gameplay, then ER is easily the best game of the year so far. The studio just needs to fix the many technical issues.

Oh I love the Adventures of Cookie and Cream. My brother and I used ot play it a ton when we were kids on the PS2, one of the best co-op games we've played together. I didn't know it was made by FromSoftware :O

Not as good as I hoped, being a first time player in the souls genre.

Maybe if you're familiar with this type of game, it can be considered great. But for new players, it feels unforgiving, confusing and sometimes badly designed(?)

The fact that I keep missing vital items, because I didn't find this secret hidden cave, is stupid imo. Also, the mechanics aren't explained too good, after 15 hours I still don't understand half the items and moves I got.

I get that the game is supposed to be hard, but I don't feel like I'm getting better at it the more I play it.

PC performance is also pretty bad, often lag spikes and sometimes crashes (though it's better than it was at launch)

The fact that's it's a big game is good, if it's fun enough to continue playing. the bosses are well designed, and the game looks good, at least there is that.

Maybe it's just me, but I was expecting something different when I started the game.

Then this game design is not for you. I personally love that you have to discover everything and infact I'm a bit sad that there is a map that shows you where you are and all the sights you have been to. I wish there were many maps that vaguely had a drawing and small description of what places looked.

And it's not unforgiving in the slightest. It's rewarding for exploration as every soulsborne game.

I'm all for discovering.. If it's either optional stuff, or if the game naturally leads you to the required item when you need it.

Having to explore every bit of the map (or look up a guide), to simply be able to progress, doesn't seem right to me.

you can reward a player who explores, but not with key items in my opinion.

And you wish it didn't have a map, with the size the world is?? It would take me 50+ hours just to figure out which way to go. To each their own I guess :D

You don't have to, the sights of grace that are part of the main story point towards where you have to go, if they don't point you, they are optional.

Also yes, I wish the world was smaller, even with the map, particularly the second zone Liurnia of the Lakes, it could literally have been half the size it is and not lose anything.

The other zones could see 0-20% reduction in size as well.

I'm having so much fun with it. There's a couple rough edges. But this is the closest a game has been to 10/10 in a very long time.

Absolute 10/10, or rather 9/10 for the rough edges of the PC port.

The game is just amazing and absolutely massive. Sekiro isn't even 3 years old, how on earth did they create such a masterpiece in such little time?

Eh sure a lot is carried over, but just the size of the gameworld, the amount of enemies and unique weapons still is quite impressive. I'm pretty sure this has to be the most massive open world of any comparable game to date, and there's stuff to do and secrets to find behind every corner.

I haven't played it, but it sounds like people compare it to Breath of the Wild, which to me was THAT game - variety, fun of exploration and game mechanics that you don't know even after putting 100s of hrs in. Can't say how elden compares for myself, as people tend to exaggerate when it comes to their fave "git gud" franchise.

I'm all for reusing assets, be it visual or even enemies(as long as they improve them). Souls games are a lot like Castlevania and Monster Hunter games and those games reuse a lot of enemies and other assets as well.

They should focus on making the gameplay and mechanics better, which they have, for both the player and the bosses, and the bosses are insane in elden ring, while the character mechanics are the best they have been yet, if we don't look at sekiro, as that's a got a different game design in comparison.

Yeah definitely a fanboy who only ever completed a single fromsoft game before, that being DS1.

How about you be toxic somewhere else and let people enjoy what they enjoy?

Fromsoftware have two and a half teams that develop games and they do NOT focus on graphical fidelity, that's how.

DS2 was developed by a different team, so was Sekiro, compared to DS1, Bloodborne and DS3. Elden ring is made by the same team that made Dark Souls 3 and that's from 2016.

So I've enjoyed my time with it. Had 2-4 crashes in around 20h of play but weirdly enough they occur when nothing is happening and no progress is lost. I will need to play to completion before I can say if it's better than the best from From ( Sekiro )

I dont play souls games but i do respect them and watch playthroughs. Elden ring is very close to perfect open world RPG without having a checklist of do this, that and pick 4 flowers as a fetch quest. A good focus on fun over realism( unlike red dead 2). You can make the game as difficult or easy as you want if your stuck just move on. What a fun world to explore and discover.

11/10 would buy again. Needs some optimization for PC, but it's all good. I can't say if it's my favorite FS game yet, but when I beat it 3-4 times in the next 3-4x months I will know for sure. So far it's better than DeS, DS1 and DS2 for sure.
