Square Enix has released a lot of beloved games, and unfortunately has also closed the doors on many of those classic IPs. After Embracer Group recently acquired some major Square Enix studios and their IPs, the company apparently sees great potential in some sequels, remakes, remasters, and spinoffs for those iconic franchises.

In a recent fiscal year report, Embracer Group said: “after the end of the quarter, we further strengthened our development capabilities and IP-portfolio by entering into an agreement to acquire Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix Montreal, including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief and Legacy of Kain and other IPs.

The announcement got an overwhelming and positive response. We see a great potential, not only in sequels, but also in remakes, remasters, spinoffs as well as transmedia projects across the Group. We expect the transaction to close in the July-September period.

Crystal Dynamics already announced that they are working on the next Tomb Raider game, colloquially titled Tomb Raider 4 at the moment, but Eidos Montreal was forced to move away from the Deus Ex series after the disappointing sales of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. And the Thief series has long been dormant after 2014’s annoyingly titled Thief.

Hopefully the acquisition means we’ll see more official entries in both Deus Ex, Thief, and Legacy of Kain in the future. It’s clear that Square Enix didn’t really know what to do with those IPs in the last few years, and under new management could see revivals once again.

Additionally, the acquisition of those IPs also means that some of those remakes, remasters, or spinoffs could be developed by their other studios they own, which includes subsidiaries such as: THQ Nordic, Saber Interactive, Gearbox Entertainment and many more. So it seems like the future is brighter for these classic IPs.

What do you think? Are you excited for any sequels, remakes, remasters or spinoffs for these games? Which one would you like to see a remake of the most? Which one would you like to see a sequel of the most? And what other studio would be good to helm an official spinoff? Let us know your thoughts!

Which dormant series would you like to another sequel from the most?

Which series would you most like a remake or remaster for?

I need some Deus Ex, specifically the Adam Jensen saga. Mankind divided was imo too short.

Adam Jensen maybe didnt ask for this, but we did...oh boy we did.

We still need the direct sequel to tomb raider underworld..

I know its wishful thinking, but i seriously hope that sees the light of day sometime, cause i think its possible to stay in that story arch :), with the valhalla etc, and lara's mom :)
