Square Enix recently sold off some of their development studios and IP to Embracer Group, which could result in more sequels, remakes, remasters or spinoffs for beloved franchises like Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, Thief and more. However, the publisher also recently revealed that one of the IPs they didn’t sell is officially getting another sequel.
In a financial results briefing, Square Enix confirmed that Just Cause 5 is in development. No more details were given, but they did hint at further investment in online/multiplayer titles, so the next Just Cause could be an online title, or have an online mode attached to it possibly like Grand Theft Auto Online.
“[The transaction's] primary purpose was a reorientation of our portfolio,” said Yosuke Matsuda, President of Square Enix. “We especially revisited our studio and title portfolios from the perspective of stepping up our offering of online titles that we develop for the North American and the European market.”
“We want to focus on creating new titles that align with our strategy, including ones that leverage new IP. The JUST CAUSE franchise will remain our IP, and we are at work developing a new title in the franchise.”
It’s unclear who will be developing JC5 though, as Avalanche Studios (the developers behind Just Cause 4 and all the previous JC games, as well as Rage 2 and Mad Max) are currently working on Contraband which was officially announced at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase 2021.
Hopefully Square Enix will share some more details soon, perhaps at the Summer Game Fest 2022 showcase which is starting tomorrow, of which Square Enix is an official partner for so it wouldn’t be beyond them to at least announce it in some capacity. Though they might just be showing more of Final Fantasy 16, which debuted official gameplay during the recent PlayStation State of Play June 2022 showcase.
What do you think? Are you excited for Just Cause 5? Which one has been your favorite in the series so far? And how would you feel about online/multiplayer elements in Just Cause 5? Let us know your thoughts!

JC2 was the best. The draw distance and the graphics were dope at the time. The series stories were almost Saints Row level so pretty retarded, but overall the series is fond to me due to the gameplay. Not sure if I'm too hyped about this new one.

I couldn't sit through more than about an hour of the 4th one (glad it was free on EGS and I correctly assumed it's not worth paying for, having seen the reviews), after having a smashing good time completing the 3rd one and its DLCs. Needless to say - I'm not really excited about the 5th one. Maybe they can turn it all around, but that is to be seen when the game is actually out.

After 4 i thought that was it for the series. It was honestly SO rushed that the only good feature was improving on the gliding from the last one. Im rather surprised that JC wasn't one of the IPs that was sold by Square, considering it felt so random to sell off Tomb Raider and Deus Ex, since they have a long history. But JC also has a bit of history, even if it has fewer games, they were definitely impactful, and much more replayable than the Tomb Raider games i've played, which were the reboot. Guess the bet was on the flashy and explody, rather than the climby and the "refined" of TR and Deus Ex. Now we just wait to see if it pays off.

I am really happy JC is getting a sequel. I know none of the games have reached the success Squenix wants but I do think JC is a good game and a sequel to a good game is always welcome.

4th was just awful to me, and the fugly pre renders were some of the worst looking iv seen in any game so far, so not really interested in this franchise anymore, JC2 was the best to me, 3rd a close 2nd but the bugs were annoying

Just Cause is basically my guilty pleasure go-to in between FarCry entries. However, JC4 was pretty mediocre storywise. I wish they would make a better story for the next one rather than go the lazy route of just slapping on multiplayer. But kids love multiplayer these days and I guess that's what brings in the big bucks these days.

I think I missed the 4th somehow.

Played it for free on Steam during a free weekend. Literally not worth the money, don't know why it was a new game. It felt more like a DLC for 3, that was for some reason less functional since it was stuttering at random on my rather decent system. There was an improvement to the gliding suit though, felt better than 3. So that's the only positive of 4...

You didn't miss much. I got it free on EGS and I'm glad I didn't pay any money for it. 3 was glorious - I had fun from start to end + DLCs. 4 - I couldn't sit through more than past around the first hour... Very different games in both tone and graphical fidelity (3 being the better one in both regards, IMO).
