Medal of Honor Stripped of Its Honor

The chance of seeing another Medal of Honor title in the future is very slim, according to the COO of Electronic Arts.

COO Peter Moore explains why Medal of Honor is put on hold, and why he disagrees...

The first Medal of Honor was released back in 1999. The game released well, and sequels were developed due to the success. In total 15 Medal of Honor games have been published, and according to EA that number may not change.

The two latest installments in the series, 'Medal of Honor' (2010) and 'Medal of Honor: Warfighter' were not received well, and were target of a lot of criticism. Danger Close, the developers, did not live up to the expectations according to many fans and analysts.

Paired with the low sales, the future of Medal of Honor looks bleak. Peter Moore, COO of EA said; “The game was solid, but the focus on combat authenticity did not resonate with consumers. Critics were polarised and gave the game scores which were frankly lower than deserved. This one is behind us now. We are taking Medal of Honor out of rotation and have to bring year-over-year continuity to our shooter offerings.”

Labels manager of EA, Frank Gibeau, also had something to say: “we’re a hit-driven business where it’s about what you can build in a certain period of time and really deliver for the marketplace, and frankly we missed on Medal of Honor. And we take responsibility for that.”

It seems that EA is taking responsibility for the failure (I think we are safe to call it that now?) of Medal of Honor 2010 & Warfighter. This being said, it's not certain what fate is waiting for Danger Close. It seems however that EA is pushing to release a Battlefield game yearly, and with that they still have a great FPS-franchise at hand.

Do you agree with EA's decision, or are you disappointed to not see another Medal of Honor in the future?

MOH Pacific Assault was the best in the series. Very challenging and very hard!
I hate that nowadays FPS are focusing on the multiplayer.
MOH should've focused on the singleplayer, they were very good at it.

Never played that one, but I agree, the MoH games should focus on sp and mp be maps of sp just with players instead of ai.

I agree. I always thought MoH should be EA's big single-player shooter franchise, while Battlefield should be EA's big multi-player shooter franchise. If you think about it, no one cares about MoH's multi-player, and BF's single-player has always been pure crap.

This is a shame. If there is one EA franchise that needs to be mothballed and/or reinvented, it's Need For Speed. The last NFS game I truly enjoyed was the Most Wanted game from 2005 that launched with the 360. It had the perfect balance of pure racing with cop chases, and the cop chases were interesting. Plus, the car customization rocked. I HATED the new feature in Most Wanted where every car would turn one of a handful of generic colors when driven through a gas station... dumb, dumb, dumb.
I would actually like to see EA take MoH back to WWII using the Frostbite 2 engine. I'm tired of modern combat games. I think it's time to go back to WWII with all of the new game engines.
One of the problems with modern warfare games is all of the real-life tech make the games too easy. It's like playing modern flight combat games with lock-on missiles and long range radar.

I agree. I could totally go for a new NFS game and not like that monstrosity last year. The technology is making combat games too easy too. I mean, in Black Ops 2, you had a sniper rifle that could SHOOT THROUGH FREAKING WALLS! Its like legitimate wall hacks :D

That's true, I just don't think it makes for challenging games.
I mean, I'm glad our military has all of this high-tech weaponry, because it keeps them safer, eliminates enemies more efficiently, and helps to minimize civilian casualties. But when you translate that into games, it takes the challenge out of it. If you break down a video game to its core pieces, the experience is about strategy and outwitting your opponents. If the experience simply becomes nothing more than overpowering your enemy, it becomes less fun because it becomes less challenging.
This is why I'm also not a fan of modern flight combat games. There's long-range radar, long-range lock-on missiles, etc. I love WWII flight combat games, because those guys were forced to get in each others propellers and square off, almost as if it were an aerial boxing match.

Haha, yeah I know a 50 cal would put a hole through a wall but not through 8 meters of concrete or whatever the number was in the game. I once put a hole through a 2 foot tree with one though lol

Not saying I disagree with you but we all need a game that is easy and overpowering. Now not all games should be like that. But we need one every 4-5 years. a game that if you have had a crapy day all day and want to unwind and just pown the *** out of some enemies you can. BUT they also shouldn't be every freaking game. cough call of duty cough*.

This was not difficult to see coming. Warfighter was a really terrible game. Everything that's crap about modern military shooters at once was what Warfighter was. Incredibly linear, very difficult to die, guns with lots of auto aim, loads of turret sections, and a whole lot of "press this button to make everything die!" sequences. It's no wonder it didn't do very well. I would love to see this replaced by a GOOD FPS, but apparently they just want to make Battlefield yearly. Why must we have games that release a new title every year? Deus Ex: Human Revolution came out years after the original (do not speak of Deus Ex 2!), and it was phenomenal! Great article whatever the case Warmice.

Plenty of people bashed BF3's singleplayer, but that is not the point of BF3, the point is multiplayer, as therox22 said.

Yes, but most people regard the MOH singleplayer as the main feature. The multiplayer is a bit generic IMO.

I tried MOH warfighter and I didn't really like it. The story sorta sucked and so did the graphics. BF3 has amazing graphics and offers good challenge and the story reminded me of the Black Ops 1 campaign. I did play MOH on an xbox, so I dont know what it was like on pc or ps3.

Medal of honor was the very first fps I played, the series really means something to me, sure the latest two games weren't their best works, but it still truly saddens me to see the title go

Saw it coming from a mile away. Anyway, I'm pretty sure they'l shrug this off in another 5 years or so and come back to give us a 'true medal of honor' experience... again.
Nice write up, Luuk.

"Let's pump out games that you'll still have to pay full price for, but only contain half the content of previous games!"
Yeah, I hate that guy's stance. Elder Scrolls games are MASSIVE hits every time they're released BECAUSE THEY TAKE TIME to make sure it's good! They spend 4-5 years on each game packing as much quality content in their games as they possibly can and they always are well received by players and critics alike, winning multitudes of awards and taking in millions in revenue.
My point with this is that I am willing to wait a few years if it means I'm going to be getting a quality product...I believe this is actually the main cause of piracy. People simply don't want to spend so much money on a game that will give them little to nothing in return. :/
