Diablo 3 launched early 2012, and has now reached the 12 million copies sold mark.

Even though the game was dissappointing to a lot of people, Blizzard are surely pleased with games sales figures so far...

Diablo 3 is developed by Blizzard, a studio of Activision. A department of Blizzard is also responsible for the popular MMO 'World of Warcraft'. At the end of 2012 there were over 9,6 million paying subscribers. While that is a massive amount, it is also a massive drop in subscribers compared to previous numbers (10 million at peak).

Nevertheless, all things taken into consideration, Activision is currently one of the healthiest gaming companies out there. Last quarter alone the company managed to make a profit of 254 million dollars. Their best selling game remains Black Ops 2, which brought 1 billion dollars to their wallets within 15 days.

Activision announced a new Call of Duty earlier today.

Skype with friends solves that no talking problem :) IF you consider it a problem, in some cases it is indeed better to team up with people you dont know.

I could bet all those sales are due to the companies reputation which they just severely damaged and the idea that you can make some money in a game. I'd love to see the Diablo 4 figures...

Would i buy it? unfortunately i already did. Why are people still buying this game has the worst end game ive ever played. Spend $60 on a game and its still pay to win. When the drops in the game are influenced by whats in the auction house it makes for the most retarded game ever made from blizzard. The day 1 error that was the worst thing ever. This was just fail of a game. PVP is not even in the game yet. OVER a year and still nothing.

If I recall correctly, GD had a news some time ago stating that Blizzard wont do PvP for Diablo 3. I think one of the reason was that the game wasnt balanced for PvP

The DRM Bullsh!t is down to piracy I think.. Shame though I reckon they lost more sales because of it.

It's absolutely 100% all about diverting piracy. But by trying to ward off pirates, Blizzard pissed off pretty much every single one of their legitimate customers. If they make this mistake again, they are going to pay the price of absolutely dismal sales figures the next time.
Something tells me that Diablo IV might be console-focused. Blizzard has toyed with the idea of bringing Diablo III to the consoles. If the Xbox 720 and PS4 end up being always-connected and do not allow the use of pre-owned games, Blizzard could just throw all of the development of D4 into the consoles, and when PC gamers complain about always-on DRM, Blizzard could blame the console versions because "that's how Microsoft and Sony make us do it."

Yeah I agree totally, its a shame and i'm one of the unhappy customers because of it. I'm really hoping the next consoles dont go always on DRM because I don't think Sony & Microsoft have actually really thought it through and it will be the retailers and developers that'll really suffer, I know when I was console gaming about 1/3 of my games were 2nd hand, and of course borrowed games to try them and eventually brought my own copies.

I have an article under review right now that addresses some of these issues; I hope it gets posted soon.
I was really bummed out by D3's always-on DRM. My job sometimes has long stretches of nothing to do, and I like to bring in my personal laptop filled with games to play during these down times. However, I cannot connect it to the internet at work because we have a very strict corporate firewall that blocks a lot of that stuff. So, I play a lot of Steam games in off-line mode. D3 would have been perfect for me to grind through at work, but I can't because I have no internet connection to satisfy it. Luckily, I do have Torchlight II, though. :-)

Thumbs up for that I know all about strict firewalls! Its an interesting state we have ourselves regarding DRM so i'm sure an article like that will stir up some good discussions on GD. Hopefully we'll get to see it soon! :)

Well, the article is mostly about the potential death of the used game market, but I do discuss the always-connected dilemma a little bit.

They do go hand in hand anyway. I can imagine a lot of fellow GDer's venting about it all anyway.. Lets wait and see what you come up with.

I forgot about that fu**ing auction house crap.
I never play multiplayer, and I ignore the auction house. I'm the kind of player Blizzard hates.

Torchlight II is really awesome. I only wish it had the Havok physics of D3, but for only $20 it's a steal!
I understand about the living situation. It can be tough. My in-laws still are stuck with dial up. They live in the country, and are only a few hundred yards from the cable hub, but the cable company refuses to extend their service down to their house. Needless to say, when I'm over at their house, I thank God for 4G data. :-)

Bought the game and barely reached the Inferno difficulty. It became too repetitive and too auction-house dependent.

I think these sales numbers would have been higher if not for D3's launch fiasco and the always-connected DRM bullsh!t.
I would happily buy Diablo IV if it did not have the always-connected DRM. Otherwise, there is no way.

I'm guessing Blizzard would put 'always online' DRM into Diablo 4 too, so there is NO WAY I would buy it. My connection dropped so many times in Diablo 3 that I lost count. It was a nightmare playing that game. Single Player mode should be OFFLINE damn it!
Starcraft 2 let us play offline as a guest, and it worked great. Why couldn't Diablo 3 do the same thing? I couldn't care less about the auction house. Never used it!
