Tomb Raider Patch For Nvidia Users

Although widely regarded as a fantastic game, the launch of Tomb Raider was marred by substantial load and stability problems for Nvidia graphics card users.

The recent patch should fix many of the game-breaking problems, but AMD's TressFX is still causing problems...

Nvidia rapidly acknowledged the issues, and claimed that they had not received the final game code until the weekend before the launch, leaving them very little time to optimise their software.

This has been regarded as an intentional move by the publishers, due to the game being officially supported as an AMD game, and with AMD's new TressFX software debut happening at the same time.

Regardless of the cause, it's good to see Nvidia working hard to fix the problem. The current patch should allow play at full settings provided TressFX remains off.

Did you guys have this problem? Do you think it was an intentional hit by AMD? Tell us your thoughts.

Yes, you can. TressFX is an AMD-developed feature, but it is very usable on nVIDIA. The recent patch for TR that came out earlier in the week made TressFX even more usable for nVIDIA players. It does take quite a lot of processing resources, but I was able to use it without any problem. You will probably be okay using it.
There was short section of the game I had a problem with TressFX. It was near the end of the game, and Lara is in a mine shaft trying to get an elevator to drop. In that elevator/mine shaft area, her hair kept disappearing. As soon as I solved the puzzle and left the area, I had no more problems.

I have the problem with TressFX still, but have decided not to play until the final polished version of the patches and any nvidia driver updates are released. I am not sure if this was done intentionally by AMD but if it was it speaks to immaturity and a game that should not have been released until some version of the Nvidia drivers and or card could run it as it should.
If AMD did do it on purpose then to my opinion is does not say anything about AMD being superior, which is why I would assume you would do this on purpose, but rather to te fact that they have an inferior or not quite ready for launch product that they were willing to release anyway. That means that they would care only about profit and not quality which I doubt.

It's strange that you're having problems with TressFX. We have very similar systems (I have an SLI set-up, but the game only uses one of my cards, anyway). I use TressFX without any problem. The frame rate of the game erratic, but it never is unplayable. Before the patch a couple of days ago I was getting 35-60 FPS. After the patch I'm in the 45-60 FPS range ("Ultimate" settings with TressFX, Tessellation, FXAA, 1920x1200), One glitch I'm hitting is using SMAA makes Lara's hair one giant blur.

So I downloaded the Beta Driver 314.21 and it works like a well oiled machine with every possible option turned to max, including Tesselation and TressFX...happy camper now

it is AMDs hair simulation technology for those of you still wondering since the link above is broken.

Nvidia has PhysX to mess with AMD users, now AMD has TressFX which messes with Nvidia users.

If you have a high-end NVIDIA card, TressFX works just fine. The ultimate problem with this game is not really TressFX, it's the fact that the only NVIDIA drivers that will really work with the game are based on beta game code, so the gold code does not function as well with the current drivers.
The patch is simply optimizing TressFX code. This is not an all-encompassing fix... not by a long shot.

Greg is right, with the new patch and the beta driver 314.14 i could enable the TressFX with overall high and a bit ultra setting. and i got like 40-45 fps, thats far more better than before the patch.

With the patch, I'm running the game at "Ultimate," which includes TressFX, Tessellation, and FXAA at 1920x1200, and getting 45-60 FPS. Unfortunately, the SMAA options make Lara's hair look all blurry, like she has a giant, fuzzy, see-through Afro. It's a very strange effect.

I play at MAX settings with SSAA x2 and Tress FX enabled and I get stable 40 FPS, but it feels faster.. It is really playable and it feels like 60fps.. However, I get odd glitches every now and then, but I suspect it is because of the Beta Nvidia driver

Just to add to the above, I found that when I disable Tesselation, the glitches stops and the game runs perfectly.. Even with TressFX enabled..

DirectCompute is one of the few areas that Fermi cards seems to outperform the newer Kepler based cards. Because of this, the 580 actually outperforms the 680 when TressFX is enabled (or at least it did when the game came out). Your card is also Fermi based so you should have the same compute advantage. The 780, being based on the titan architecture should not have those problems with compute.

Waiting for a patch. I am very happy that Nvidia and Crystal Dynamics told us that they are working hard to solve the optimisation issues unlike some other companies ( Im looking at Ubisoft and ACIII atm ).

It absolutely astounds me that a publisher/developer will create a landmark, graphically-intensive game - and advertise the game as such - and not support the very feature (SLI/CF) that will allow the game to run optimally on high-end systems.

Until NVIDIA also releases a new driver update, this game still will not be optimized. The patch from the devs is a good first step, but we still need the driver.

Well, first I am glad to see the situation fixed. Second, none can tell that AMD intended to do that. For instance, if this was in return for keeping PhysX exclusive to Nvidia only, AMD wouldn't say that Nvidia users are allowed to use TressFX and so, I don't think it was meant.

amd could not have made tress fx exclusively for radeon graphics like physx because it is not inbuilt into a gpu but actually just a soft tool
