Timesplitters Reboot Allowed By Crytek

After Free Radical, the original Developers of the Timesplitters series, went bump back in '09, Crytek bought up the rights to the IP.

They've now proved that wasn't just a grab-move, and are allowing a community based project called Timesplitters Rewind, which aims to blend the first three games into a new, current release...

The game is being developed with CryEngine 3, and will be aimed at making a good, nostalgic multiplayer experience for up to 16 players (or bots).

The team hope to have a demo of the game ready for December this year, and the final, completely free game to be early next year. The game team is, of course, open to donations, and they are currently doing all of this work in their spare time.

Although Crytek gave the team permission to use existing game assets, they refused, instead starting from the bottom up re-creating the models faithfully to the originals. This should mean that the game will make full use of CryEngine 3, making the development even more exciting!

I can't tell which part I'm happier about; that a group of people who love timesplitters so much are sacrificing their time to make a free game...or that Crytek have endorsed the effort!

Are you guys going to donate to help the project? Do you remember playing Timesplitters back in the day? Tell us below!

As long as the developers use CryEngine 3 way more effectively than City Interactive did with Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2. City Interactive managed to take the same engine that powered Crysis 3 look like something that came off the GameCube, circa 2003.

I played one of the timesplitters games on the first Xbox, but I don't remember which one it was. I do remember that it was a weird game. Fun, but weird.

Never understood the rampant appeal of the TimeSplitter games. They always seemed a little too goofy to me.

Exactly, the golden eye playstyle with incredibly goofy missions and characters with a lot of side missions (zombies, russian zombies, aliens, etc) made it fun

You know, I remember playing the first one that came out with the PS2 launch, and I think what turned me off about that game was, of all things, the character design.
