Assassins Creed Creator Patrice Desilets Fired By Ubisoft

Assassin's Creed creator Patrice Desilets was shown the door yesterday by Ubisoft.

The split was at first thought to be mutual but Patrice revealed that wasn't the case...

Patrice Desilets had already departed from the company back in 2010 after finishing his work on Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. He had decided to throw his lot in with THQ, and joined THQ's Montreal studio.

Things took an interest twist when THQ completely disintegrated and was then auctioned off. As we already know, Ubisoft then purchased THQ's Montreal Studio and so Patrice ended up back at Ubisoft.

News broke out recently that Patrice was departing the studio for the second time, and Ubisoft put the rumors to rest:

"The acquisition of THQ Montreal in January allowed Ubisoft to welcome 170 experienced developers, including Patrice Desilets, to our existing and renowned workforce. Unfortunately, since the acquisition, the good faith discussions between Patrice and Ubisoft aimed at aligning Patrice's and the the studio's visions have been inconclusive. As a result, Patrice has left the studio. Our priorities remain with the teams already hard at work on projects in development. They are at the root of Ubisoft Montreal's past and future successes."

To this, Patrice retaliated with the following statement:

"Contrary to any statements made earlier today, this morning I was terminated by Ubisft. I was notified of this termination in person, handed a termination notice and was unceremoniously escorted out of the building by two guards without being able to say goodbye to my team or collect my personal belongings.

This was not my decision.

Ubisoft's actions are baseless and without merit. I intend to fight Ubisoft vigorously for my rights, for my team and my game."

The tension present here is for everyone to see. It is saddening another conflict between publisher and it's employees; And in this case, a very important and respected employee.

Back in 2005-06, Patrice was tasked for a Prince of Persia game. While researching for the part, he came across a huge story-arc of the Crusades invasion. It was so big that Patrice approached Ubisoft to give it it's own identity, hence Assassin's Creed was born. He went on leading the team through what most AC fans agree on to be the best of the hooded Action/Adventure franchise, Assassin's Creed 2.

Ace developer Hideo Kojima has also praised Patrice's 'focus on game design'. His resume of games include: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed 2, MGS 4 among others. As we speak, Assassin's Creed is Ubisoft's most prolific franchise, so it is suffice to say that he is easily one of the best at what he does.

Patrice's departure will not only hurt his legion of fans and friends, but also the gaming industry on the whole, because such talent, until employed again, will only sit idle at home.

GD only wishes the best for him in his future endeavours.

So GD'ers, are you a fan of Patrice's work too? Should Ubisoft bring him back with dignity or will he be better off at some place else? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

[Update] - And it's happened. Patrice has sent Ubisoft a legal notice and dragged them to court. The latter have also responded that they will see him in court. For his humiliation and misconduct, Patrice is seeking $400,000 in damages along with the rights to the last game he was working on, titled 1666: Amsterdam.
Who does your loyalty belong with, GD'ers?

it must have took him a lot of research and creativity to come up with something like assassin's creed.....ubisoft could have used him for creating more unique games....too bad they don't truly realize the full potential in him

Ubisoft is one of the worst gaming companies ever. Their assassin creed games were good in the beginning but then they took a turn for the worst and the one part that pisses me off is ubisofts program when you start it up on the PC it's a rip off of the wii. I played not even 2 hours of Farcry 3 and i stopped because it was so bad.

I couldn't play it. It was so boring and so horribly optimized i just said screw it. The worst part was you having to install the ubisoft program that's like a ghetto wii. I laughed at that.

a company like Ubisoft should not do these kind of things!
i love ubisoft too much for games like Far Cry 3, Assassin's creed series..
that was not a good move... developers are the heart of the industry.. people really liked ac2, that was all because of him...

Somebody's going to pick him up again. I know I'm a bit of a fanboy, but...maybe he'd be a good addition to Bethesda. ;)

Yep, toss in some more intensive rpg elements into Assassin's Creed and give it that special secret Bethesda flavoring and you've got a success. :)

I don't think that the series disappearing is the issue, more like too many of them. I they wait 2-3 years in between games and develop them only at Montreal then this series can be truly refreshed, otherwise I don't see how they can bring any new entry that will truly feel fresh and innovative like it was with AC2.

Now I found the reason that why the story of assassins creed and 2 was better than any other installment. Now I aint gonna by AC 4. Assassins creed 3 bring Total dissapointment to me. I hated that much that I dont even completed it.

Partrice is really the Ken Levine of the AC series. I am thoroughly disappointed by Ubisoft's decision making in his case, he really was AC's only hope of re-becoming the franchise than we knew and loved up until Brotherhood. Such a shame.

It really is, I used to be such a fanboy before and whenever somebody criticized the series I'd have been all over them but now I'm criticizing it myself, it 's just too much of the same with every "new" game which actually has very little or poorly implemented new in it.

AC2 is what brought me into the franchise. The sequels that came after it didn't give the same feel it gave. I guess this is why.

Exactly the same for me. Back then the console version was out and so I had time to get into the franchise and finish AC1 then AC2 came to PC, it was great but since then, nothing like it really.

Yes. I too feel that AC2 was the last innovation in AC franchise. Realistically speaking now, I see no future for Desilets in Ubisoft...
And people thought EA was crude to their employees. Not being rude myself, but Ubi is much like EA themselves...

D├ęsilets deserves better. Ubisoft, if you have any common sense, you'll give this man his job back. Also, make him a part of AC again.

agree he deserves to be in Rockstar games where they took time to polish the game. Not just like each installment per year. And which have less story missions and more bugs.

I know, and it's really sad. AC 1 was my favourite by far in story (and, to an extent, gameplay) and while I appreciate that they listened to fans' feedback in AC II, a lot of the changes in later sequels were made to facilitate their 'one sequel a year' idea. The games became easier, the plots less detailed and character less diverse to placate a wider audience. Any AC fan should acknowledge what this man has done for the series.
