Origin Adding Achievement Support And Origin Points

Written by Andrew Moynihan on Sun, May 12, 2013 11:00 AM

Origin has long been slammed for having no extra features compared to it's competitor, Steam, and how it forces people to install the service to play certain games.

They are at least working on the features part - the current beta update contains client Achievement support for popular games, along with "Origin Points"...

Origin points are gained by completing achievements - which makes the whole deal start to sound a lot like Microsoft points. If true, it could be a point in Origin's favor, as the achievements (although widely used by developers) have no other effect on Steam.

The patch will also bring advantages to the streaming/broadcast system and the ability to make full use of your 64bit hardware when launching via Origin.

So, do you guys think people are going to be as obsessive about their "Origin Score" as Xbox players are with their gamerscore? Or will this just be another gimmick to try and get people to use Origin? Tell us what you think.

Why so much hate on origin I personally love it and hate steam, i mean i have never had an issue which is origins fault only issue ive had was recently with the attacks on the battlelog for bf3 whereas steam dies every other day and doesnt let me play the games i spend my hard earned cash on, not to forget that its so damn slow.

I'm pretty sure this is only you that has problems with Steam, EVERYONE in the world enjoys it. Maybe you should get faster internet if you're having speed issues, because Steam has NEVER been slow for me, it never crashes, and I've been able to play every game I've ever bought from them without a problem.

It is not internet it is pc lag it slows down the average pc, even my i3 gets laggy on steam startup, it also is a very dominatory and intrusive app.

I have never had problems with it being intrusive it tends to lie around online on my PC. It is slow startup and my net is bad so that's why other days it boots up fast :)

Mine boots up in seconds every time, I'd guarantee it's your harddrive that sucks if you're getting boot times that creep slowly...

That's something with your PC then, I have a laptop with an i3 processor, and it lags a little on startup, but not much, once it gets going my PC runs fine, I tried Origin once, and there were no free2play games, no good sales, NOTHING, so I never touched it again, uninstalling it after that first visit, Steam actually has good sales, and plenty of free games to play if you have no cash for games.

oh EA...your stupidity never ceases to amaze me. I'll give credit for the achievements, but, when compared to Steam, Origin SUCKS, even with the new "features." Origin should be buried in a hole, never to see the light of day again >.> The only really good thing they could do, would be make the "Origin Points" go toward rewards like discounts or even free games, THAT would get people to use Origin over Steam.

Trophies and achievements are here to stay. Only Nintendo has not jumped on the bandwagon. I do like Sony's trophy system as you can try to increase your rank or reach a milestone in a type of trophy or total trophies. I have Rank 17 with 2731 trophies. Origin points won't make me buy any more games on their services. I'm happy with Steam.

To many different platforms for achievements, I really only care about trophies significantly right now. Everything else is fun to get, but I will certainly not be bending over backwards to try and get some origin points.

That's all he has? I thought he would have 500,000 by now. At least all his points are legit.

Oh yeah, that reminds me that the only reason I have origin installed is because BF3 was supposed to be €5...Time to uninstall since it wasn't on sale, no use for it now!

I always buy my games on disc, so I don't need any extra features on Origin or Steam. I only use them because some games demand them. Which is fine with me. I will take Origin/Steam over any other type of DRM.

I hate Origin, if EA didn't force me to use that crap for BF and SimCity then I would've never even install it.
