Kinect 2.0 SDK Coming To PC Soon

Written by Shivam Kumar on Thu, May 23, 2013 11:15 AM

Microsoft is really going to rock this year; first they showed off their Xbox One, and now  they have confirmed we will see the new Kinect working on Windows.

It was thought that the Kinect 2.0 was going to be exclusive to Xbox One given the lack of a USB connector, but we've been assured it will be ported...

Kinect program manager Scott Evans said:

"We will bring this to PC. We will have more information soon."

"Soon" hopefully means they will reveal this at E3. Microsoft has released Kinect 1.0 for Windows system, roughly after one year of the release of Xbox 360; although many people think that was merely to save face, since it had already been hacked and used for various projects by then.

It seems Microsoft don't want that same situation this time, and is already preparing to release the SDK in the future.

Harvey Eagle, Xbox's UK marketing director, told that Xbox one won't function without a Kinect connection. He also unveiled that the Xbox one will allow players to get the full gaming experience in other rooms, not just the living room.  He said:

"We use the living room almost as a moniker - that's where we assume the best screen is in the house, but if you like to play in any other room in the house, the Xbox One will deliver the same quality of experience whatever the environment."

Kinect 2.0 could provide us with next-gen gaming experience even on our PC. Reports claim that it will be able to examine our skin color and transparency to get our current heart rate; as Valve will tell you, this is a strong indicator of how engaged they are. It is also rumoured that it will keep a record of profiles, linking them to specified controllers.

This will help users to swap controllers without going to profile change option, as it will itself recognize the new controller and select the linked profile. The Kinect will house a 1080p RGB camera, which will provide a huge improvement over the previous VGA sensor, and will have a data processing rate of 2Gb/s and could fit six skeletons at one time (for comparison, the original Kinect got confused when there were more than 2 people in its play area). The field of view has been improved up to 60% compared to the previous version, to help get those 6 skeletons in.

What do you think on the new Kinect? Will it be shown off in more detail at this E3? Tell us below.

The day John "TotalBiscuit" Bain does a YouTube video of himself playing Kinect 2.0 on his beast of a PC is the day it's -30 C where Satan parties.

I really appreciate they making such efforts, but i personally don't think its going to be a huge sale cuz its only appropriate to use it while gaming on HTPC, think about it..... 6 people cramped in your room bumping into each other..... your bro being recognized as a "second player" while he is just playing skyrim on his pc behind you

FINALY, Microsoft giving some attention to PC. Even though I don't like Kinect, maybe in the future they will focus more on the PC. After all, most gaming is done on Windows

"Xbox one won't function without a Kinect connection." So does that mean if your kinect is broken, your xbox won't function or is also broken?

I don't want to have my skin color analyzed, I want to play games! The gimmicks may be fun for some, but I suppose I'm old school in the fact that I just want to boot up a game and jump right into it...so imo all this touch screen, motion sensor, gadgety stuff needs to get out of our games...shrug

i'm not in love with it, but would be nice it if functioned well in identifying players and seamlessly switching between profiles. i'm 10x more inclined to use leap than this (google maps and total war), but at least they're not closing this door to to future innovation on pc.
