Column - Gamers Are Too Forgiving

Written by Luuk on Sun, Jun 23, 2013 11:33 AM

Just like that, the Xbox One has taken the lead from the Playstation 4 in pre-sales. Incredible isn't it? Which leads me to say... Gamers are too forgiving.

Although Microsoft have backed down from their harsh requirements for the console, they still thought it was a good idea to begin with; and almost certainly still think it is now...

For those who somehow managed to miss it all; Microsoft basically wanted to regulate gamers with new systems and rules that restricted all the things we're used to - offline gaming and game lending/resale. This resulted in a brewing storm on the Internet; Microsoft's fan-base diminished within hours, and those remaining loyal fans were ridiculed across the internet.

Meanwhile, Sony got the image of a gamer-loving friend, as they did not implement these controversial regulations. As a result, many ex-loyal Xbox fans decided to take the big and scary leap over to the PlayStation 4. The PS 4 pre-sales exploded, surpassing those of the Xbox One by quite a big margin.

Surprisingly, Microsoft then announced they would get rid of the regulations they were so confident in. Sure, some ex-Xbox followers refused to go back to Microsoft after they've screwed them over, there is no way other way to put it. But there was one thing that really made my jaw drop...

The Xbox One pre-sales nearly exponentially started going up, even surpassing those of the PS4. Ahem.

Now one might say that these gamers are the ones who made this Xbox 180 possible. I'll argue that these gamers are letting themselves be toyed with by Microsoft. The company experimented with a new system, one that would give Microsoft all the control. Why? Obviously, it's all about the money...

Alright their experiment failed, gamers weren't planning to get robbed. Solution - Reverse the systems and the gamers come running back, not even a sorry needed (literally, there was no apology made). Better luck next time, right? Right, because Microsoft in no way got punished, they've just gotten a free inquiry done. A fresh advertising campaign sweeps all that bad PR under the rug.

Another factor is that Microsoft, thankfully, doesn't have a monopoly on the console market. Due to Sony's PS4, they didn't get away with their restrictions. Competitivity is of vital importance, as showcased here once again. The gamer had a hand in it as well, as they've clearly made the choice for the PS4 once Microsoft announced their restrictions. Still, Sony deserves some props as they didn't follow Microsoft's example in a hunt for more control and money.

Sadly, gamers didn't stick with their ideals and chose for... for what? What made them go back to Microsoft? Exclusives do play a factor, though both platforms got great exclusives coming up, and well.. If we are honest none of them is worth buying one or the other platform for, solely. Friends then? Well, since the majority of the community already chose for the PS4, most of your friends would be at the PS4 regardless.

Perhaps it's a mix of both factors stated above, but above all convenience. People don't like change, so if they can avoid it, they will. If Youtube, or Game-Debate for that matter changes it's layout, it will face a lot of resistance, regardless of the improvements. Only later will gamers (usually unnoticeably) start to appreciate the changes.

Another factor to remember is market talk. Microsoft handled this one quite smart (was about time...), claiming they 'listened to the community'. Surely this cannot be denied, but they didn't revert all this because of their gamers' needs. Figuring out that the gamer doesn't want all these restrictions doesn't take an above average IQ. All it takes is common sense. But Microsoft is thinking in market sense, and these restrictions in that regard were rather appealing.

It was unforeseen however that the backlash would be this big. It was so big, that Microsoft decided to revert the changes. The sales were dramatic, Microsoft could nearly start using their overproduced Xbox One to feed the fireplace fire.

Though instead of sticking with their ideals and pride, and letting Microsoft know we are no gold-formula test rats,

many gamers dediced to embrace Microsoft once again, for all the wrong reasons.

How come? Are gamers too forgiving? I guess that's one way to look at it. Though gamers also like convenience, and do not like change. And since gamers have so many different preferences (in hardware, game genres, controllers, you name it) they do not feel connected with each other, hence you will never see a true 'boycott'.

If the facts don't fit the theory, change the facts.

-Albert Einstein

So, do you think Microsoft reacted to our outcry, and have turned over a new leaf? Or are they waiting for us all to buy one before putting the restrictions back on? Tell us what you think below!

What do you think we should have done?

I agree, but the hard truth is that the average gamer just wants to get their way. They want to play their games their way and if a company does that, then they seem to forget everything else the company does...this is why pc gamers still embrace rockstar, or gamers in general still buy ea games. It's just consumerism...

This is ridiculous, why would people be okay with this?? It clearly shows that MS does not care about the consumer...they care about money, that is all. Even though they implemented stuff that was horrible, it was still new and unique, now...its just a souped up Xbox 360..
Ill stick to the Pre-order of a PS4 and my PC which im upgrading in a month or so.
Ill get an XOne when its like $299 or lower

heh, brighat said it best.
Anyway, I think that people are too easy to give in to Microsoft, they don't realize, after all of the pre-orders are in, and people get their consoles, they can easily secretly add the restrictions back, and gamers won't realize it until AFTER they get their console :/

Microsoft fanboys are like people in abusive relationships. They get treated like dirt yet continue to stick around with the abuser because they can't live without the charms the abuser has. Even if they didn't reverse the DRM, they were going to eventually buy into MS because they aren't smart enough to see that this relationship isn't any good for them. Those of us who know PC gaming and a PS3/4 is the way to go should just laugh at these morons who are again going to be pilfered out of their money. Microsoft has never cared about them and never will. They deserve no respect. I have no clue why anyone would pay $100 more for a less powerful, more intrusive and more questionable machine. As Don King says "Only In America!". PC/PS4 FTW!

From my point of view, it's not a good move to buy a console before its release. All the marketing tricks may convince the fanboys but they never convince me. Xbox One might be better in the end. The pre-release console wars are great for talking and only for talking. Its nice to spend hours discussing about Sony and Microsoft but when it comes to buying one of the two you have to decide on facts which you can never now before the actual console is out. Personally I wouldn't buy an Xbox One after what happened. (I won't buy a PS4 either 'cause I'm a PC gamer but if I had to choose, I would prefer the PS4)

People shouldn't care. Console wars are just a useless squabble for morons to boast thinking one console is better than the other. I won't lie that Microsoft is obviously ing over the the dumbest of people. Hell the South Park pictures explain this perfectly. I could care less that the morons who went to Ps4 then switched back to Xbox because I don't want dumb ing people on the console I prefer. Let them waste 499$ and we waste 399$ + 49$ if you don't Ps+ plus I guess a game. Either way Microsoft will reverse this policies again in the future after they've made the money off the morons

Not to mention.. It's a patch. Which means you NEED internet at the initial startup. At this point the console is useless if YOU do not have internet. So people buying the console now because they reversed the policies probably don't understand this. At least those who aren't tech savy and don't have or have unreliable internet. In all honesty they should have kept the formula instead of giving in to Gamestop and various other places to make money. It's just money, the people did not reverse this change. I can't just.. I don't understand how stupid some people can be.

What amazes me was that Microsoft tried to implement this kind of thing in the first place.
Suddenly they have seen the error of their ways and do a 180?
Oh suddenly they can remove some of their features?
What if they try to tack it on later?
The question really on my mind is.
What were they thinking in the first place?
I think I'll stick with a PS4 since it's cheaper and you get the same performance.
I'll wait and see what happens to the Xbox One before I even decide to buy it.

Exactly what has been going through my mind since Microsoft s flip-slop. They were willing to put in place all these terrible policies because they figured "hey were Microsoft and people will buy our Xbox just because it says Xbox" and now that is EXACTLY what the gamer market is telling them.

@upsurge
You don't need a "kickass" cooling system to OC. As long as it is good enough, it's OK. However, I strongly recommend a cooling pad, to keep the temperatures as low as possible.
@Adderbine-you don't need to OC, your laptop is a nuke!

I thought Last Light needed the Titan to max out.
I have a cooling pad. I know heat is a computer-killer, so I try to take all the precautions.
One thing I am worried about is FFXIV and not meeting the recommended system requirements for it. My girl is showing great interest in FFXIV, so I'm worried I won't be able to play it decently with her.

Instead, buy GuildWars 2, or get LoL, or any other MMO over FFXIV. I strongly recommend you stay away from that game.

I would, but as I said.... my girl is showing interest. If she chooses to play it, I will, too.
Besides, if I don't like it, I have other MMO escapes. EVE Online being the main one, and looking forward to TESO (The Elder Scrolls Online). Regardless, I will be playing FFXIV if my girl chooses to.

I am still getting a PS4 before i even think about getting a xbox one. reason A they didn't say that they were not going to have the kinetic listen to you all the time (kinda freaky even if it doesn't send anything). and reason B they didn't lower their price. Even with the corrections you made Microsoft you still ed up. You ed up Big time.

MS would award people for watching certain ads and they would know what ads you watched via the connect which would had to be always on... The kinect could also read your pulse and facial expressions and judge the number of people in the room...

the kinect will only show movies to one person in the room, thus it is infact monitoring you
you have to register your voice with the kinect for operating the box using voice commands
a bit suspicious isnt it
in an age where access to ur email address is restricted how valuable are your voice and bodily shape
some hacker may hack the kinect database to download pictures of you
