I'm sure we all did it; spend three missions in the early GTA's driving around on a bike, then giving up on the story, turning all the cheats on, and driving a tank over everything.
Rockstar do appreciate that the previous storylines have been a bit slow though, and are intending to make the game a lot faster with GTA V...
In an interview with Jeuxactu, President of Rockstar North Leslie Benzies commented that:
"We want to surprise people with very intense missions from the start. The pace of the game is much faster than any of its predecessors. From the beginning, we want to show off the new game mechanics while creating intense, action-packed gameplay, to capture the player's attention immediately."
Talking about the 3 protagonists, she said:
"Remember that the three characters in the game are already living in the city of Los Santos and surrounding areas. They are not newcomers like Niko and Tommy Vercetti, or people returning after a long absence like CJ.They already have contacts, they are integrated with the world and lead a busy life - these characteristics should give players a sense of immediate and total immersion."
She also mentioned that all of the 3 character will not be playable initially, but rather they will be brought into Michael's life when he is in need of partners. This allows you to get to know the characters as individuals, with their own traits and backstories; something that she feared wouldn't happen if they were instantly accessible.
"We want to give the player the opportunity to get to know the three characters individually, and explore the world as each of them, and it would not have been possible if all three had been available from the start."
