Omni Treadmill Gaming Peripheral Pre-Orders

Written by Felix Nova on Mon, Aug 12, 2013 2:49 PM

Take Virtual reality to the next level, or so says the marketing that accompanies the Virtuix Omni Natural Motion Interface.

The treadmill will hook up to your PC and convert your real movement into keyboard movement. So you can run, walk and even jump. This gaming device is due out in March 2014 and they are taking pre-orders now for just $499...

The Omni Treadmill blasted through its Kickstarter campaign earlier this year and now the option to pre-order is open to everyone, although their is still quite a few months until its intended release.

You stand in the centre of the treadmill device, put on some special Omni shoes, that come with it your purchase, and walk or run in the direction of your choosing. You can even strafe and jump. Of course if you happen to start moving away from the screen then you will not be able to see where you are going. This means you have two "kinda realistic" options.

   1. Get a screen in your living room that goes 360 degrees, so that no matter which way you run you will be able to see the screen.

    2. Get an Oculus Rift to wear on your face while you run about on the Virtuix Omni Treadmill.

What do you get for your $499?

• 1 Virtuix Omni natural motion interface platform

• 1 support harness

• 1 pair of shoes

• Virtuix Omni tracking software and hardware

To be clear though the Omni pre-order purchase of $499 does not include the Oculus Rift and it also does not include your postage and packaging.

The Omni can support people up to 285lbs or 130Kg and anyone from around 4 foot 8 inches up to six foot 5 inches.

The Omni treadmill is about 48 inches in diameter and has a 20 inch platform.

If all goes well with the Omni Treadmill they are likely to introduce accompanying tracking software and devices that will function similarly to the Kinect to help interrupt all of your bodies movement without the need for Kinect.

There will also be an SDK released alongside the Omni to help encourage the development and use of the device.

Because the Omni is converting movement into keyboard presses the device can be used with pretty much all games.

What do you guys think about the treadmill? Is it going to liven up your games, when will you actually use this?

i cant imagine having to run long distances with this. I would have to run 15 mins, walk for 5, run for 10 walk for,,,well just keep damn walking =D I think the omni would only EVER work for single player games, i mean, can you imagine playing a game against someone who is super fit running and jumping around while you are trying to catch your breath. If you could implement this for online games (lets just say that ppl would use this online) not only would you be called noob but ppl would also be telling you to go to gym fatass =/ But still, moms would buy this for their obese stayathome kids

Incredible! RPG will become "true"...role playing games. Think about your character: the fatigue level is directly linked to your health status. Now we will see characters that are a semi-"true" avatar of real players: only the braves will run and jump the most. It's also a VERY GOOD way to keep you in shape: who will dare to say VGames are unhealtyh now? ;)
BTW, you can't spell magics in real life so the char will depend only on stamina sta

No, gamers will try out Oculus Rift, they will get bored & give up.
Mouse + keyboard & controllers will always win for years to come.
Most casual gamers play games to relax for sometime. They wouldn't want Oculus Rift.
Most hardcore gamers will be disappointed by the limitations of Oculus Rift.
But thats just my opinion.

I do like the idea of the Oculus Rift though. But knowing my luck I'd buy it and then it'd make me feel sick
