Gamescom Starts!

Electronic Arts officially opened Gamescom 2013 with their showcase headlined by their list of next-gen games. There is a lot of new information, and even more in-game footage by EA this time around. A great show in all aspects so let's get started, shall we..

The Sims 4

EA began with The Sims 4, the next game in one of PC's most influenced franchises. Already riding high on pre-reveal hype, the live-action that was shown really hit all the spots. Though not as a big a leap in terms of graphics, the code this time around is 'emotions'. Emotions will have a significant effect on the lives of Sims and, in-turn, keep players engaged for a long, long time init's already addicting world.

In the trailer, two Sims were arguing for the same woman. Andre then played a violin, to which Allie cried (emotions) and then he retaliated by stabbing Andre with a voodoo doll - all in an effort to win over Sophie... This is but a small presentation of how these emotions will forever change the behavior of Sims 4.

It was all very interesting and only time will tell if this emotion-heavy Sims will come to fruition, but we think it will be change for the better. And did I mention this game can be played offline and is DRM-free..? There! now you know. Good start, EA.

Command & Conquer (2013)

Next came EA's RTS game, Command & Conquer (2013). Two developers demonstrated the game on the big screen, with one directing tanks and helicopters to attack the other. The second one seemed a bit more patient and seeking the opportunity, sneaked a fleet of choppers to the back and destroyed key buildings and laying waster to the support units.

The action seemed as chaotic as gamers expected and visual appeal really amped up everyone. They also stood up for eSport tournaments, which will take place in the coming days. In a long time, this is one F2P gamers are looking forward to play... Good job, Victory Games!

Dragon Age: Inquisition

Next came Dragon Age: Inquisition, another game from an adored franchise from EA. BioWare started things up with a developer diary of the game stressing that Inquisition is all about 'freedom'. And with freedom comes a lot of choices, which BioWare will put forth aplenty in this game. That's always a good thing in my book.

With more information due in the coming days, we are happy to say that, unlike the previous game, this one is actually giving us good vibes. Let's just hope BioWare can create the magic of the first game while surpassing it in all other departments!

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfar

EA then decided it was time to ease off and throw in some fun, aka Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare. Hype and expectations for the game is.. surprisingly high. PopCap revealed the zombie classes, nothing we didn't already expect. It was also revealed that Garden Warfare would first launch for Xbox One.

In a trailer that followed, a football pads-clad zombie starts firing footballs from a machine gun, another rides a jackhammer across the pavement... it showed what the game was all about - fun! They also revealed a boss mode, exclusive to tablets and Kinect. It lets players deploy AI units from a top-down view, like all the other games (read Battlefield 4).

This online-shooter is shaping up to be quite a fun ride.

Peggle 2

EA's new puzzle game, Peggle 2, is going to launch "first exclusively" for the Xbox One. That was the only significant we could remember from it's short presentation, not to mention it looks ridiculously similar to it's predecessor. But with Peggle being such an awesome title, we assume that's a good thing...

The game definitely has it's audience, but will it's exclusivity, albeit for a limited time, hinder it's path to greater heights..? That's something we'll know later this year.

UFC 14

EA again mixed thing's up a bit and showed one of it's Sports Label game, UFC 14. The game has been making strides since being taken over by EA form THQ a while back.

A trailer was shown where two of the sport's real-life contenders were going at it. And what a trailer it was. Showing realistic expressions and fluidic movements, EA's new Ignite engine really shows it mettle. EA's Canada studio, specialist in sports franchises, has been giving this game extra focus.

The fact that the trailer shown was pre-alpha instantly ups our expectation from the final product. Speaking of their commitment towards the game, we are really optimistic until the game ships 9 months from now.

Need for Speed: Rivals

Another shift in tone, and this time EA went for a franchise that exemplifies high velocity and intense thrill; aka Need for Speed. Ghost Games' NFS: Rivals is looking like another solid title in the long-running franchise.

EA showcased a trailer where cops and racers rule the streets. They shed some light on the game's career modes and more on that in the days to come. Cops were given extra attention here; go undercover or expressive force to control the racers. You receive Speedlist of objectives when upon completion, level up. Speed points will be your cash and can be earned by participating and winning duels. Spend or save, it's up to you.

The game looks to be more accessible and it's online play looks the strongest in the franchise's history.

Titanfall

EA and Respawn's new game, Titanfall. Winner of over 60 awards from back when it was revealed at E3. The game got an instant reaction out the crowd which goes on to show the immense interest the game has garnered in such a short span of time.

A trailer was shown featuring more humanoid tech battles on a new map. The action starts in an urban area where the player gets an objective and while en route; destroys a Titan with a rocket launcher, jumps from building to building, all very smooth; deploys a Titan, shooting ejected pilots in the process; suits up and brings in the big guns; destroys enemy Titan in s blistering shootout. The trailer ends in a dramatic evacuation just after the good guys are forced to retreat.

The game looked amazing and we're all looking forward to playing it early next year.

FIFA 14

Back to it's Sports Label, this time Fifa 14. EA showed how this next game in one of the biggest selling franchises is going to change we play it. A short preview trailer was shown to excite us and to an extent, it did.

What really caught everyone by surprise was EA F2P Fifa initiative and one for PC gamers called Fifa World. Being in Germany, they called upon one of the game's yesteryear European legends. This was just to showcase EA's commitment towards the European clubs that have finally made way into the game. At least most of them. With exclusive content called Legends containing nearly 40 Legends from the past, was announced exclusive to Xbox 360 and One.

It is common knowledge that we at GD are hardcore PC gamers, and as such, Fifa World sounds really intriguing. Though it's limited to only a couple of countries when it launches. Nonetheless, this game is looking just as impressive as did it's predecessors.

Battlefield 4

Now to end the show, there was arguably only one title that could give a proper send off to the attendees. And what's that, you say? Battlefield 4, that's what!

There were many short snippets of the game during the show. One in particular, showing Battlefield 4's multiplayer game, was jaw dropping. Remember all the Levolution speeches back from E3? This trailer showed exactly what they meant. Huge, varied maps with large-scale destruction and the world's instant reactions to our actions really showed the immense scale of the game.

That makes us question their PR. Instead of giving confusing information about Levolution, they should've just released this one trailer and it would've put across the message, loud and clear.

Back to the topic, DICE revealed the game's multiplayer beta is incoming early October. Also returning is the very successful Battlefield Premium, with exclusive content for players have-& will pre-order the game from Origin. Save transfers from current-gen to next-gen was also touched upon.

If you, for some reason, you weren't interested in Battlefield 4 up until now, this showcase by EA can surely sway you back in. We're very excited for this game and we'l jump into action straight away when it launches come October 29.

So there you have it. EA showed great variety in it's showcase of games this year. Though nothing new, this existing line-up of games is one of EA's strongest in years and come later this year, they will once again stamp their authority of being one of this industry's leading players!

Game on, GD'ers!

So GD'ers which of EA's titles excited you the most?

"Key game: Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag"
And the article doesn't even have a single mention of AC4. Way to go, GD.

The tagged games are associated with Gamescom 2013 which is the overall theme. This article is just a part of Gamescom coverage.
And the article itself is clearly an EA piece and that should have been reason enough for AC:BF's exclusion. .
Hope that makes sense :)

Plus it ain't all about the visuals, right? :D

Of course, it's not always about the visuals. Gaming is all about having a fun experience :) even if it means playing at the lowest res and settings in your laptop. And If consoles is what you love, well, it's really up to you. I prefer PC cause it just gives me more fulfillment, excitement, joy, and an awesome challenge :D . Console is just ,you know, simple. It's just a box that you plug games into, play that's it. (no offense). Not really my thing. Instead I like PC cause I get to build and study parts myself, and I really enjoy doing it. It's just more fun that way for me. But if console is really what others want, who can judge them. It's what makes them happy. And that's all that matters. No one is on bad side. Right? :D

You remember Vasebreaker (endless) from P vs. Z? It was a very repetitive puzzle game, but it became very challenging and therefore couldn't bore me; I think the play time for this puzzle game was at least the 'adventure' play time :P
Eh, just don't think this would be an issue for me.....

Well, even though I loved the arcade puzzler Peggle and Peggle Nights and am looking forward to see more from these series, I am most excited about Garden Warfare; looks like a beauty product to me! Besides, so much good memories which came from the 2D prequel(?) :D
Not much into race these days anymore.....I hope some creativity will surprise me in Rivals.

To be honest, I don't like writing nor like reading and therefore think it makes sense to say I don't really need 'a story' in whatever game...but of course it counts for me too ;)
Haven't played many MP games, but ain't it sometimes an excuse for lack of creativity? Not saying most of the multiplayer games are bad, but doesn't it decrease the variety of levels, size of the 'play world' etc? F.e. take NFS: The Run (still playing) → the single player mode was ok, the multiplayer mode was even much better, but it became repetitive; without focusing on the MP mode too much, couldn't we expect more from the story, replay value, cars etc.?
PS No need to answer every question :P

a solid story can make up for anye game! have you played "to the moon" that`s a good example. to me Story, gameplay and music all equal but very important factors for any good game

Just goes to show they've run out of ideas for the franchise... It's just the thought of sacrificing one phase (which everyone is craving for) for another (something gamers which is suppose be an add-on). Granted, The Run's campaign was not favored but that was entirely because Blackbox treated single-layer as an add-on...
Anyway, are you excited enough to buy the new NFS? Not me really...
Lol :D
@ Orp Yes, a story can elevate even poorly made game. But that's gonna have to be one helluva story.. ;)

@Taher: nicely spoken; makes sense! Ending with I'm not excited enough about the 'new' title..I'd rather play U2 again or NFS:MW for the 3rd time :P

A good thing for the industry, but a casual gamer like me can get a 'mind explosion' too; too much games I'd love to play and care about :P So much time spent without playing games....and too much care makes you stressed; I'd better prioritize (again) and forget about a few games :P
