Crytek Announces Newest CryEngine

If you're ever looking for an engine to make your game look stunning (and make most computers cry), it's always been the CryEngine you go to.

Crytek have announced their newest version of the engine, which will be used to power the latest next-gen games; but decided to not bother with the engine's numbering system anymore...

The latest version, known simply as CryEngine, is the most recent update on the CryEngine 3, which was released four years ago. Now that the engine is updated on such a regular basis, Crytek said it makes no sense to use version numbers.

Crytek's Carl Jones said:

"Since CryENGINE 3 was launched in 2009, we've dramatically changed the engine so many times, with so many major new features, it’s not the same engine anymore. We have revolutionised many parts of the engine: we have overhauled our entire lighting system, built movie quality character rendering and animation solutions, vastly improved the speed and effectiveness of our Sandbox editor, and even our rendering has changed with tessellation, pixel accurate displacement mapping and now physical based rendering; all of this while maintaining our first principal: that making games should be real-time, all the time. CRYENGINE is a new engine from Crytek – and it always will be!”

So we should be seeing CryEngine games looking absolutely top notch for years to come. You can visit their website if you want to see more. So do you think Crytek will manage to stay ahead of the curve for gaming graphics? Or will the Unreal Engine catch up? Tell us your thoughts!

hope they'll improve AI navigation so I'll be able to manage the traffic system for the game...

yesterday it downloaded only 300MB, then only 740MB, then only 1.6GB, all those corrupt, because the package size is 1.8GB, I guess I'll wait till work where I can download it faster I hope :/

1280x1024 is like 1600x900,
I'll test 1920x1080 later when I plug my PC to my 42" fullHD TV in another room;
1600p res is very rare, more common is 1440p (2560x1440 @16:9)

in dirt showdown on ultra and 4xmsaa and 1080p resolution it goes 109 fps which is better than gtx titan who had 91fps

@XxS ..yea I was surprised too, overall the card is designed for beasty Titan, so at default fan rpm was kept below 40% at max load, targeting 79°C, then I tweaked the fan graph, now temps don't get above 65°C at 57% rpm and power consumption showed by EVGA Precision is 50-70% (of 230W TDP I believe)

@tzzsmk your setup is a beast, we know :) but even the great GTX 770 and GTX 780 are beaten handily by a HD 7990, no need to defend your rig, just because it isn't the best card doesn't mean it isn't a monster,also allow me to say this bluntly you really didn't have to start this string of comments by saying "HD7990 isn't that good..." it really shows that you haven't seen the latest performance results, which we have faith that you indeed,did,and this isn't intended in any way to be rude or disrespectful

btw just to explain my previous words,
as I'm messing with few game engines recently, I realized ANY gfx card is relatively weak, just take a look at 3D Mark 11, if games had such graphics, even todays real beasts wouldn't get more than 30 fps IF game makers designed the levels and details certain way;
and sorry if I'm wrong, but for the price of 7990, I can buy GTX760 in 3-way SLI, at least here in my country :Đ

you probably can, but 3-way sli doesn't really scale well yet, maybe that's changed, not sure haven't been reading up on my SLi articles and enchancements lately,and aren't GTX x60 and below restricted to 2 cards? and the compute performance is really lacking, but for gaming who cares?
