Nintendo surprised everyone by coming out with a new ‘2DS’ revision of its 30+ million selling handheld console.
The new (and not so portable) DS will retail for just £109.99 when it comes out on the 12th October, the very same day the all-conquering Pokémon series makes its 3DS debut with X & Y...
The new console plays all 3DS and DS games in 2D only, and has been designed as a low-cost entry into the handheld family.
The 2DS is similar in style to the 3DS’ XL upgrade but comes in a solid tablet form-factor, rather than the clamshell design that we are all used to. The new form-factor is significantly larger than the other models, its portability only of use to those with the largest of pockets.
The initial launch will see them arrive in red and blue colours; expect yellow imminently for the ultimate old-school Pokémon experience (Poké-balls not included).
The hardware itself comes packing all the features seen in the 3DS, minus the 3D effect of course, including its dual-screens, wireless connectivity, touch capabilities, as well as a 3D camera; you can only look at your 3D pictures on a 3DS however.
This hardware reshuffle looks to be an attempt to hook in the parents who are concerned with the safety of the 3D effect for their children, something which caused quite the media storm back when the console launched in March 2011.
Nintendo of America’s chief Reggie Fils-Aime said:
“The Nintendo 2DS and the just-announced price cut to the Wii U puts Nintendo in a strong position coming into the crucial Christmas sales period."
"Nintendo has one of the strongest and most diverse video game lineups in our history."
"Today we're making those unique Nintendo experiences more accessible and affordable. However you play and whatever you play, Nintendo has you covered."
Many feel that the Wii U has done too little in the branding department to differentiate itself from the Wii; do you think Nintendo is tripping over the same hurdle yet again? How do you feel about a pocket monster machine that won’t fit in your pocket? As usual let us know below.

Most people who are complaining are adults. This isn't designed for adults, it's designed for tiny baby men (or women) who aren't great at looking after things, hence the larger and more robust design, and the 3d removal is so they don't bugger their eyes up permanently in the future. If you own a 3DS already, then why the hell are you complaining about this? It's supposed to be a cheaper, watered down alternative for children.

Yeah, you're kind of right there. +1 for you too

wish they made another revision of the ds, or this 2ds, or the 3ds, that can play old game-boy games again!

That design is just horrible...

I think its actually only 1 screen, with the plastic in the middle separating it to make it look like two. Both screens are touch screens but the top one is covered with hard plastic so you cant touch it. I think its this way anyway.

No.
they are different size

I think if the design was better, it wouldn't get so much hate. Just look how many dislikes that video has.
