Playstation 4 Supports Four controllers

Written by Jon Sutton on Wed, Sep 4, 2013 7:00 PM

Sony President Shuhei Yoshida has responded to a query on Twitter about the number of controllers the PS4 supports simultaneously.

Following the news that Xbox One will support a whopping eight controllers, Yoshida simply
tweeted “4” in response. He is a man of very few words...

This is obviously a significant drop from the seven supported on PS3, and while many games didn’t support the feature, it was certainly a big plus for fans of football and wrestling game.

The PS4 has been attracting significant interest in its build-up to a November launch, selling out of day one pre-orders across many of its release territories. The demand is thought to far outstrip previous launches from the Japanese giants.

Does the lack of 7+ players affect you at all? Did you even make use of 7 controllers on the PS3?

Up until now I didn't know the PS3 could handle 7 controllers, 4 seemed like enough to me. 7 people on the one screen would be chaotic without screen split. But if they split it 7 ways I don't think I would be able to see what I'm doing.
So I will be more than happy with just 4 controllers on the PS4.

Honestly I rarely use even two controllers these days with the advent of online multiplayer, so I think going back to the industry standard of four is completely acceptable. Not many games support local multiplayer anymore anyway, so having the option to use more without any games that support it is something of a mute point in my opinion. It certainly doesn't affect my decision on which console to buy anyway.

Why. The crap. Would you want more than four controllers at once. Why? WHY!? This xbone 8 controllers thing is just another desperate last ditch effort to gain as many supporters as possible. Just another worthless feature for xbox fanboys to rub in everybody's faces thinking it's a huge advantage, which it isn't. When has the number of controllers EVER been a problem through all of gaming history?! Hell, I love the ps3 and I completely forgot that it supported 7 controllers. LOL and what's online for anyway? People only use online anymore anyway. So who cares.

this, I forgot the PS3 supported 7 controllers too, like I said in my comment, splitscreen is rarely in games anymore, much less more than 4 people at maximum.

Yeah even if a game is able to support splitscreen. You better have a freaking huge TV otherwise it will be a very crappy experience while playing the game. Splitscreen for 2 is already annoying imagine with more than four

yeah, playing MW2 local with my cousins a few years ago, just three of us playing was a pain, and I think I had my flatscreen then :/ I can only imagine how bad it would be with 8. unless like some of the others said using 8 controllers, it would be okay, but, I personally don't have a use for 8 controllers, I only have 2 friends that come over and visit ^^;

I see this being useful for sport type games, like NBA, FIFA, ETC. Cause it's one shared screen and if you have 4 on 4 it makes it more fun cause you don't always have to have a crappy AI

what about madden and fifa that have 11 men on a team? sure u can all play online and fill your squads but ppl that get together with their friends and play sports games at each others houses is prob the biggest reason they are doing 8 controllers imo

I only use two controllers on any console unless friends bring there controller, which rarely happens. Two only for me is fair enough.

The most I've used is 4, and that was for LittleBigPlanet(1+2).
I don't think this will affect many people at all. Besides, with all the data it's got to handle from the controller input, more than 4 may be too demanding perhaps? I don't know. Just speculation.

Only four ??? Somestimes i wanted to play with all of my friends and would have enough space for all of them to play with me... i would atleast do 6 controller handling

Doesn't affect me at all. Max number of controllers i've used is 3 and very rarely. Too expensive to have more than 3. Especially since the dualshock 3 controllers cost 50-60€. So Xbox can keep their 8 ontrollers. good luck finding someone that will actually use 8.

The most I used at one time on my PS3 was 3, so it's not that big of a deal to me that the PS4 only supports 4 controllers, personally I think 8 is a bit of overkill on the Xbox One, I don't see what games would use that many, since most games have no local, splitscreen multiplayer, anymore.

This is the reason i will not get a console because all of my friend are gonna start coming at my house so they can play my PS4/Xbox.

I have never used more than 4 controllers at once. It will be a disappointment for those who did, however, that demograph is pretty small and niche.
So it's all good :)
