The developers over at Creative Assembly have been hard at work on the first of a weekly series of patches for Total War: Rome II after less than stellar stability at launch.
The first beta patch has been released and is available to download now, bringing with it a raft of fixes to ease some of the woes experienced since Tuesday...
ROME 2 Patch 1 Bug Fix Analysis
Rome 2 Multiplayer Fixes/Updates
• There was a system lock issue in Multiplayer Campaign battles when a desynchronisation happens that has now been fixed. Player will now be notified of the desynchronisation, and the battle will end
• Fixed Multiplayer Campaign battle "overrun" prompt, which was not being shown to a player if they were a reinforcement and the other player was a spectator.
• Fixed a situation where the host of a Multiplayer Campaign is unable to move the camera in the campaign on some occasions, after reloading a save game.
• Improvements to Auto-resolve balancing in Multiplayer Campaign and Single Player modes.
• There was a screen freeze occurring during the Multiplayer Campaign. This happened when a human player reinforced an AI ally. Because the AI ally was already victorious it would leave the player stuck with no victory / continue / exit battle user interface functionality to get back to the campaign map screen.
• “Zone of Controls” will have the issue fixed where hidden armies were becoming visible on mouse-over, to both players during head-to-head Multiplayer Campaign mode.
Rome 2 Performance Issues
• Increased average frame rates when using initial start-up settings (more conservative settings)
Rome 2 Graphical Glitches
• The environment map wasn't being created properly which lead to black reflections, so we introduced a fix for the DirectX 10.0 Lighting issue.
• Samothrace temple complex world wonder would have appeared as if it was sunk on the Campaign map.
• During Port Assaults chance of naval units occasionally clipping through the harbours/ports or ground when disembarking reduced
Rome 2 Crash Issues
• A corrupted loading screen that would appear when alternating between fullscreen / windowed mode after a battle, and before going into another battle has been fixed.
• Safe guards added to prevent a very rare crash when you are engaged in coastal assault battles.
• Fix for game lock up during the end turn sequence / Celtic AI faction turn in single player campaign.
• Bug Fixed that caused Campaign modes to lock up after battle.
Rome 2 Gameplay Balances and Bug Fixes
• Fixed an issue where the defender previously had the ability to create encampments when involved in a combined battle.
• Added some localisation fixes to the Italian, German, French, Russian, and Spanish audio packs.
• Improved the AIs use of walls on the large Athens settlement battle map.
• Aligned the upkeep costs of ship units with that of land units - increased the price of mercenary ships and made the non-mercenary ships cheaper.
• Transport ships turn incredibly slowly in Rome 2 and this annoyance has been adjusted, speeding up transport ship turn rates.
• Civil war can happen when an imbalance to the factions ruling members occurs in game. Due to the high impact this can have on a persons game, the frequency of this occurrence has been tied to the player’s campaign difficulty level.
• Fixed vehicle ground pipes in order to prevent Siege Towers becoming unable to move when they are left empty when the Deployment Phase of a Siege Battle has started and then units are moved into the Siege tower.
• Bug fixed which meant that a ship ramming another moving ship side on would cause both ships to stick together and strafe in battle
• Issue Fixed from Campaign modes which meant Armies would be stuck in and could not exit Muster stance.
• Issue in Campaign modes where spies get stuck on the top of fleets fixed.
• The unit pathfinding on village battle maps, mainly barbarian villages, was causing problems during battle navigation. These no go zones have been revised to enhance the unit pathfinding.
• The Shrine of Neptune structure was applying an incorrect cultural influence bonus, this will be fixed.
• A handful of various minor bug fixes to the city based battle maps.
• The "Rome Wasn't Built in a Day" Steam achievement was not becoming unlocked sometimes even though its achievable criteria was being met.

Rome 2 Patch 1: Does it address the problems facing the initial release
Even with this patch, many of the issues haven’t been fixed. Rome 2 Frames Per Second issues still plague many users, especially those with ATI cards, and although improvements have been made the game is still unplayable for many.
Similarly, the multiplayer issues have not been fixed at the cause - the patch has only stopped the regular desync’s from crashing the game. The massively high AI turn times are still present, and some people cannot even boot the game successfully - or else crash after only a few turns in game.
Creative Assembly have said that only 2% of players are experiencing issues, but they are working hard to fix the problems. Following on from today's patch, the second patch should be available to beta test on Monday 9th.
Rome 2: What more do we need from the a patch
Here’s a full list of issues that players are still experiencing with the game, many of which have not been addressed in the patch at all.
To start with, many people are having issues booting the game, which rather trumps everything else. Campaign and balance fixes are lovely, as is fixing the turn rate on Transport ships, but if people can’t play the game to begin with there is still a substantial problem.
Many more are able to boot the game, but experience substantial FPS lag - even though their PC’s ran Shogun II without issue, and they meet the Minimum System Requirements, Rome II is causing much frustration. Some are even complaining that the units look worse than they did in much older games when the graphics are lowered.
The Multiplayer mode in Rome 2 is experiencing issues as well, with many reporting outrageously long AI turn times. On top of that, de-synchronisation issues are rife, which thankfully since the beta patch no longer crash the game - although they still require you to quit out of multiplayer.
SLI graphics solutions seem to be having issues with the game, with bad performance even on strong cards. It’s not clear if this is simply a driver issue, or if the game’s optimisation is part of it.
ATI users aren’t in the clear though, as many players are reporting that simply selecting units or buildings will generate FPS drops, which disappear when the units are deselected. Needless to say, selecting and ordering units is slightly important in Rome II, and many players are unhappy.
The game is apparently to get weekly updates following today’s patch, so we could see these issues being cleared up soon. Still, three days after the game’s release and some players have yet to boot the game, nevermind play it, has left scores of players/barbarians yelling about the game they had such hopes for.
