A dark sci-fi future has been presented to gamers in various forms. The world of entertainment has explored ways in which our ever increasing dependency on tech will shape our future. But what happens if our dependency goes too far?

Cyberpunk 2077 is a new role-playing game set in a futuristic dystopian world, where ultra-modern technology co-exists with a collapsed and weakened human society. To add some further insight we have a real treat for you, an exclusive Cyberpunk 2077 interview with CD Projekt Red...

GD Exclusive Cyberpunk 2077 Early Dev Interview

Not content with just working on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt; CD Projekt Red are hard at work on Cyberpunk 2077’s story-driven open-world RPG experience with multiplayer elements. The game marks a distinct shift away from the fantasy stylings of The Witcher, being primarily set in dank cityscapes and urban environments, with corruption and decay rearing its head wherever you turn.

Unfortunately we’ve got quite a wait on our hands before we can get to grips with this. CD Projekt Red are shooting for a 2015 release, so we thought we would see how things are shaping up.

According to Antoni Strzalkowski, producer on Cyberpunk 2077, they are looking to offer "tonnes of player possibilities" and in true open world fashion, the player will be able to choose to not follow the main story if they get distracted by something else in the game world. They dont want to rail road player choice or even block them from being able to explore any part of the game world.

How will CD Projekt Red be able to make the in-game technology as futuristic as possible?

Rafal Praszczalek a writer on Cyberpunk 2077 explains that a large amount of focus is on social communications. We are all wirelessly connected, through our current tech, portable smart phones. Rafal will be pushing those sorts of boundaries, exploring the way technology connects different social groups.

Rafal goes on to say "Tech is always changing us or are we just looking for something to blame for our social changes?"

Another area the two guys were up for discussing was the players character selection.

Antoni "We want to give the players as many tools to express themselves. Player character customisation will be visually represented. These player character choices will not only be important from a gameplay mechanics point of view, but the player's character design choices will have a direct impact on the development of the story"

Our buddy leading the session, Tomas Rawlings, summarises "So the choices you make in the creation of the character will reflect back in the story itself"

Cultural, social and political issues that are often associated with the Cyberpunk genre will take a back seat in the primary story arch. This is not a game about saving the earth from itself. These somewhat huge and heavy themes will of course still be present in Cyberpunk 2077's background, to help deliver the gritty Bladerunner-esque landscape we know and love but the focus is about living in and being a part of the tech-rich world.

Rafal - "These big issues can easily lure us into building a story like this. Cyberpunk covering these issues is important and should be presented in the game. Cyberpunk still hasnt been fully explored. There is a future for Cyberpunk as a genre but we can not predict the genre's newest future before experiencing it."

CD Projekt Red turned the gaming world upside down with their incredible, adult themed RPG, Witcher games.
Cyberpunk 2077 writer, Rafal, highlighted that genres get re-defined every generation or so, often to better reflect the interests of our society at the time. The Cyberpunk genre is a hard one to tackle lightly. A game would have to create an immersive, believable, parallel version of our world, set not too far from now. But based on the CDProjekt Red resume, the title is in good hands and even if they dont manage to reinvent the genre we are likely to see a great open world sci-fi game come out of it.

For now though, we must wait for the release to reach us from the future and remember our best preparation for the game's release is to embrace tech.

Hi Amazon, I would like to pre-order a Retina Mouse and shiny Space Drive please, so I can play Cyberpunk 2077?
