UK retailer John Lewis is betting on the Xbox One outselling the Playstation 4 this holiday season, despite the common public perception that the Xbox One is going to struggle to gain ground after the less than positive reveal.
With both Microsoft and Sony set to launch consoles within a week of each in the UK, John Lewis is choosing to back the Xbox One as its best-seller this Christmas thanks to more popular software and the Xbox Live online platform…
John Marsh, head technology buyer for the up-market department store, said that "We are expecting more interest in the Xbox One."
Marsh went on to say, "We are stocking both the PS4 and the Xbox One, but if we were to back one, we are thinking that Xbox One will appeal a bit more to our customers in terms of the experience it creates."
The figures that have been available so far indicated a landslide in favour of the PS4 at launch, but this rapid start looks to have been steadily eroded as public opinion on Microsoft’s all-seeing box shifts with each policy change.
Pre-orders for the PS4 are thought to have already reached a cool 1.5 million worldwide, with this figure presumably not including the recent Japanese sell-outs. Microsoft is yet to release its official pre-order numbers, but if the free bundled in games that were recently announced is any indication, all is not as rosy as Marsh makes out.
“The software that the Xbox One launches with will really appeal to our customer base based on what we’ve experienced in the past,” he said. Of course this isn’t necessarily indicative of the wider opinion, and John Lewis certainly isn’t the first choice of many gamers here in the UK for picking up a title, but it’s nevertheless interesting to see the tide turning somewhat.
The Xbox One is set to launch on November 22nd in the UK, swiftly followed by the PS4 launch a week later. Whatever the outcome, it’s sure to be a busy couple of months for retailers as the long-awaited next-generation finally arrives.
