In the latest mammoth blog post in its Road to Battlefield 4 series, DICE went extremely in-depth into how progression, ranks, item unlocks, and the mysterious Battlepacks are to be earnt in the eagerly anticipated shooter.

There looks to be some significant changes to Battlefield 3’s formula of unlocks, as well as a greater variety of challenges than ever to keep you coming back for one more go on that treadmill…

The maximum rank in Battlefield 4 will yet again be Colonel 100, with each rank having five sub-ranks that are denoted by Roman numerals. For example you would start at Private I and make your way up to Private V, before hitting rank 6 and becoming Lance Corporal I.

“Your rank is directly tied to your accumulated score throughout your multiplayer career, and is a way to represent the sum total you’ve accomplished so far,” reports DICE in its blog. “A very skilled player will rank up faster than an average player, but it also comes down to sheer time that you have dedicated to the battlefield. Even if you hit the Colonel 100 Rank milestone, there are still new items to collect—we’re adding high-end assignments that are only attemptable by high-rank characters.”

There will be the usual ribbons doing the rounds, 45 in total, but there will also be a medal associated with each and every ribbon this time, that will be earned when you’ve received 50 ribbons of the same kind. To top it all off DICE has said that dedication in certain areas will earn you Service Stars, with a total of 13,000 available to those who wish to become a modern day Genghis Kahn.

This sounds like a pretty mammoth task when all's said and done, but DICE is going to great lengths to ensure that those who put the effort into team objectives are rewarded sufficiently.

“If you are trying to reclaim a base but get killed just one second away from completing the capture, you’ll still be handsomely rewarded for the great attempt, for the risk you put yourself in, and for playing the objective,” according to DICE. “By contrast, doing the same in Battlefield 3 would have netted you 0 points if the flag was not at least neutralized.”

There looks to be the same effect across the board as well. Getting an assist for example, will now count as a kill in terms of points, in an effort to push everyone to help contribute to causes together. The same goes for merely carrying a bomb a certain distance or doing damage to a vehicle.

Unlocks now also won’t be tied to classes but rather to the gear that you're using; if you keep perching on hilltops and sniping enemies from a kilometre away, you’ll be rewarded with more rifles and scope attachments. Playing the class will not unlock you the weapons, but rather the weapon that you choose to use will.

Information on Battlepacks has been light on the ground, and after the news that Premium buyers would be receiving some exclusive Battlepacks, many have been worried that these could be introducing a pay-to-win scenario to Battlefield 4. DICE hasn’t exactly been quick to refute this but has said in its blog that “The weapon accessories earnable in Battlepacks are not game-changing in any way, as they are simply cosmetic variants of accessories you can already unlock via the normal weapon progression.” Ho hum, we'll see how long that lasts...

So there you have it, quite a bit more info about how the unlocks system should be working, but check out the Road to Battlefield 4 blog for the full, lengthy details.

What do you think of the barrage of unlocks available to you now, will anybody bother sticking it out for the 13,000 Service Stars?

Do you think that you should be rewarded for incompleted tasks such as failed captures or assists?

As always be sure to let us know below!

So premium players have no advantage over normal players in a map that is available on launch? Then whats the use of premium aside from the maps and modes DLCs

Not in my opinion ;)

It costs almost as much as the game, I would like to have some rank advantages if i was paying so much dough. But yeah, it would be very unfair for normal users.

Well it's still cheaper than purchasing all the DLCs separately :D

The Battlepacks seem like TF2! WTF is wrong with DICE, Rockstar and all those!
Rockstar made in-game purchasable money, and now DICE made those batlepacks!
I hope they aren't purchasable, otherwise Battlepacks and GTA Credit - pocket vacuum cleaners :P
