We at Game Debate like to believe that games can be for everyone. Which means that those of you whose tastes are more light hearted than some of the gore-fests and psychologically disturbing offerings more readily associated with this time of year need not go without your fix of seasonal gaming.

Today's two games put sweet above scary, but are still entertainingly spooky titles perfect for a little bit of Halloween fun.

Plants vs. Zombies

No Halloween is complete without a good zombie. Those flesh-eating sepulchral monstrosities are almost as quintessentially Halloween as jack o’ lanterns and inappropriate costumes. But if merely the thought of sitting in the dark on Halloween playing Left4Dead 2 is enough to induce sweating and shaking, then you might want to sample something a little tamer. Never fear! Halloween can be a time for everyone, and the more faint-hearted among you still enjoy everyone’s favorite botanical zombie-slayers in PopCap’s Plants vs. Zombies.

Wildly addictive, enjoyably challenging, and extremely endearing, this great tower defense game has you guarding your property from hoards of animate corpses just dying (sorry) to eat your “delishus brainz”. But with the multitude approaching, you’ll have to rely solely on your garden flora for help to keep yourself from their cold dead fingers. Fortunately for you, they’re not only surprisingly willing (you know ... by flower standards) come fully equipped with a variety of tactics and projectiles. If the chrysanthemums in my window box could do that, maybe I’d remember to water them occasionally …

Costume Quest

If you love candy and jack ‘o’ lanterns but hate flesh eating mutants and things that go bump in the night, then look no further than Costume Quest. Possibly the best game for the faint hearted on Halloween because, well, it’s set at Halloween. Complete with costumes. And it’s not scary. In fact, it’s adorable.

You play as one of two brothers sent into your new neighborhood by your parents to make some friends trick-or-treating. But alas! Your sibling is captured by a band of marauding monsters (not because these monsters are terrifying beasts who want to eat your brother’s brains, but because your brother is dressed as piece of tasty looking candy corn, bringing whole new meaning to the concept of “children of the corn”).

The game then entails you carrying on your trick-or-treating escapades in order to gather candy (used as bargaining currency), hints as to the whereabouts of your brother, and new costume items to change your appearance and fighting skills. Nothing says “Halloween” like costumes, and these play an essential role in the game’s mechanic. They allow you to transform into giant the creatures you are dressed as during battle, with abilities that correspond to your appearance. As well as looking utterly charming with its bright, cartoon spooky aesthetic, Double Fine’s wonderful indie offering is great fun. Perfect for those of you who want to recapture lost youth this Halloween, or for anyone nostalgic for a good old simple, turn-based RPG.

For tomorrow's Halloween special we'll be sticking with the indie theme. This time, however, we are going to be checking out the best in horror gaming from independent studios, with a couple of spine chilling classics to get your hearts racing.

What will you be playing this Halloween? Have you got your own old favorites, or will you be looking to get your hands on something brand new and scary?

Let us know your Halloween preferences in the comments!

Sadly, the only game(s) that can scare me is OUTLAST or very rarely Amnesia because of their atmosphere. Dead Space had a "spooky" atmosphere too, but the game simply DID NOT scare me a single time... I feel like I'm missing something about horror games :D

As I [sort of] said, it's the scariest game I've played. But then again, don't ask me since as I DID say too, I'm not much for horror games.

Well, Outlast isn't really scary. I don't really get scared of the faces of the monsters, but it's the thought of getting caught by them and the jumpscares that really put me on edge. The definition of scary for me is monsters/ghosts with reeaaalllyyy creepy faces :P

I'm pretty good at psychology[c stuff :D] and here's what I know: The thing that scares any person most is the thought of being scared. You know you will be scared. Our imagination scares us. The stuff we can come up when in a long, dark hallway alone when there are some "odd" sounds at the end of the hallway is simply incredible. In short, as we wait for being scared, it makes us much more vulnerable to any scares. Outlast uses this part of human thinking to its advantage.

Sheesh. The title clearly says "Games for the Faint Hearted". Which means they're games that are meant for people who don't like to get they're pants soiled, but still has a spooky setting.

So Plants vs Zombies ain't exactly your Resident Evil style shoot em' up zombie game but it is very addictive and number 2 is now on android so gonna give that a look.

She is only recommending two games for people to play over Halloween that's all, it in no way merits calling her a retard.

She said "Today's two games put sweet above scary" meaning these aren't your Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Amnesia, Fatal Frame etc style games...
Even the title of this article suggests that these are games for people that don't want to play those kinds of games. I don't see what the problem is...

Exactly my point Flutter. People seem to expect scary games, even though it is mentioned multiple times that this blog will feature casual games which just happen to be suitable to some halloween themed gaming.

Those games are so "not" for Halloween. :(
I've always played some 2D Indie Horrors with my friends in the dark. xD
Trust me I'm faint hearted, but still I don't understand how those 2 games could even scare anyone xD

Why so much hate and negative comments? All Kate did was recommend 4 halloween themed games in 2 different blogs. One was aimed for people looking for a game that is actually scary, and this one, for those who are looking for some halloween fun, but nothing too scary.
Seems like people miss the point.

I certainly have to disagree with Otac.
The "Best Games For Halloween" articles are going on for a handful of days and they are structured to offer all gamers from all walks of life find something that suits their taste.
The brilliance of gaming is that we all enjoy different things at different times and there is usually a game that will fill that hole. Thats just cool, right?
People may not even be looking to play something that "scares" them around Halloween, but they certainly shouldnt be excluded from the collective fun that can be had by getting involved with a holiday shared by many. Therefore games like Plants Vs Zombies, with its easy going cartoony fun of horror, certainly provide some people with a fun and related game to play. F

You didn't state an opinion, you attacked me because I stated my opinion, stating a counter opinion is being written in a more polite way, saying "I have to disagree with him" is a clear and direct offense to the oposite speaker. :)

Well, you're not gonna be banned for having an opinion, but to be honest, you may be made fun of, insulted & thumbed down. I've found that out the hard way...cue thumbs down on my comment haha :D
No, but really it depends on the user...the admins are generally very cool and respectful, but occasionally you're going to get a bad apple who will be disrespectful to people. :/
Edit: I'm not getting the same feeling from Felix...his comment seemed like a polite disagreement. I've had people "disagree" with me on this site who have proceeded to call me an idiot for my opinion, thumb me down, told me to kill myself, etc.

Hey hey guys, no offence meant.
Dear Otac - I did state my opinion and it disagreed with you, just like you disagreed with the author of this article. Surely thats only fair? I then went on to explain the logic behind the article and why I disagreed with you, especially regarding your mentioning of "Scary", which this article is trying to help people avoid.
This is Game Debate, we are certainly allowed to have a chat about games and the articles written on the subject. I positively encourage people to get involved on GD and have a friendly discussion.
So I hope that helps and if not then you are welcome to chat to me on my profile wall at any time.
Flutter - Please tell admin if that ever happens, as that sort of anti-social behaviour is not acceptable on GD and really shouldnt be acceptable on any site, although it seems to be a way of the internet.
People should be accountable for their actions and comments even if it is online. Internet anonymity is not really something people should attempt to hide behind when they post comments, especially nowadays when ips and locational tracking is so much easier for webmasters. Anyway I digress.
Have a great day and I hope you are getting excited for Halloween, F
