Microsoft Shows Off Xbox Ones UI In 12 Minute Video

Written by Katie Allen on Fri, Nov 8, 2013 5:00 PM

With the next-gen console race hotting up as we move into the final stretch before launch day, Microsoft has used a video on their official blog to showcase the Xbox One's new user interface.

The 12 minute video walks watchers through the main features of the Xbox One, demonstrating their use and versatility.

Yusef Mehdi (Corporate Vice President of Marketing and Strategy) and Marc Whitten (Chief product Officer) spend more than ten minutes of the “all-in-one” demo going through features that include gaming, live TV, OneGuide, Skype, the user activity feed and more. The console's instant switching is showed off, as well as Kinect's biometric sign in based on facial recognition.

At one point, Whitten commands the console to “go to Internet Explorer”; a sound most people won't have been familiar with since around 2004...

The instant switching voice commands and biometric sign in certainly looks very shiny and efficient, but it remains to see how practical they might be in your average living room with background noise and other such disturbances.

You can check out Microsoft's extensive demonstration of its console's user interface in the video below.

How do you think the Xbox One UI is shaping up? Do you think it will prove as slick as it seems on video in users' living rooms?

Let us know what you think.

Well I like both consoles pretty much, but I prefer the xbox because of the kinect. I recently got an xbox 360 with a kinect (At the wrong time, I know) and the kinect is very awesome.

lol that Windows 8 Metro Theme. Why not just focus on what consoles are made for like Tero said? No need for this Hulu and Netflix junk-we have PCs for that.

Microsoft has a very awesome thing to showoff(metro theme) nowadays so it is adding this theme in all of its systems. From windows to its xbox. Nice!! ;D

The consoles are taking a depressing direction... Isn't console gaming supposed to be just that, gaming? :/

I like this type of stuff. The consoles are getting out of the whole plug it in, put DVD in and play your ass off. As long as this Kinect and Social Networking stuff stay the hell off the gaming features I will surely like to have them around

tzzsmk's comment is correct. It doesn't work as smoothly as Yusuf and Marc want you to think it does.

For media and social I think this looks great, for gaming which is what most will probably buy it for, I really don't think it's worth the money.

to be honest, I have no objection against the user interface, whole thing looks really friendly at first look and simple enough for casual users;
Kinect seems to be really cool device and I think it might decide when people will doubt between XBOX and PS4...
but that's all good I can say for now, and there are things which are really bad:
controls - as it's supposed to be "living room machine" I'd expect that when I will watch movie/tv/youtube I will not be forced to use the xbox controller when the xbox features Kinect - in the video I didn't notice any gesture control; another "problem" is that I sense the xbox might force people buying QHD and XHD TVs because when you have only upscaled 1080p you cannot put much on the screen - which would be against the purpose of having multiple things running side by side;
the video looks chilled-out and I think Microsoft is doing the "ad" part really well, but we can't truly say if the TV was powered by performance of XBOX ONE or if it was running on PC again because in the beginning it's written " The following demo was recorded.....and features live code from an Xbox One" so I sense that Microsoft plugged the stuff into PC which was running xbox system, and therefore provides really smooth performance...

Yes the UI is good... But it remains to be seen if the douchebox one can do what a console is supposed to - play games smoothly with decent visuals... J@cka$$es at MS; what the hell were they thinking...?

You must be kidding,it's more a blu-ray player/tv receiver than a console xD

Otac15 is right... douchebox one is like a set top box crossed with a middle class APU based laptop running Windows 8 and a blu ray ODD thrown in... Rather than being a console that can play movies and allow net browsing and blu-ray playing and social networking, the douchebox is more like a blu-ray playing, social networking set top box that can play games...

Great for anybody intimidated by a PC. Still want no part of the Xbone, though. Give me a $1500 desktop any day.

I have the feeling, though, that it's very similar to Windows 8 :D
